Frequently Asked Questions

General Counseling

Q. How do I make an appointment to see a counselor?

Call 293-3518 between 8:00 and 4:30 or come into MCK 181 to sign up.

Q. Is there a fee for counseling?

Counseling is free to full-time BYU-H students and their dependents.

Q. Are things I discuss with counselors kept confidential?

Personal things you discuss with counselors are not discussed with anyone else, except in the following situations. Your counselor may occasionally consult with another Counseling Center counselor or with a Physician who referred you for therapy. As a general rule, you counselor will release no information concerning you or you treatment to anyone outside Counseling Services unless you grant permission, the information is sought through an appropriate court order, or the release of the information is required by law. For example, your counselor may give information to appropriate people in the following circumstances:

  1. If you threaten to physically harm yourself or someone else,
  2. If you indicate that a person under 18 is being physically or sexually abused, or
  3. If your records are subpoenaed as part of a legal proceeding.

Q. What is counseling and how can it help me?

Counseling is a process of talking about concerns, worries, problems, situations, or life directions with a person trained in mental health practices. The counselor facilitates the person’s self discovery and problem solving. Counseling involves talking, thinking, feeling emotions and changing behaviors.

Academic Standing

Q. What is Academic Grade Warning?

Grade warning occurs when any semester/term grade point average or cumulative grade point average falls below 2.00 for the first time.

Q. What is Academic Grade Probation?

Grade probation occurs when any semester/term grade point average or cumulative grade point average falls below 2.00 for the second time. If you have ever been on warning or probation, and then had a subsequent semester in which your GPA is above 2.00, you are back to normal status. After that, if your semester/term GPA or cumulative GPA falls below a 2.00, you will go directly to probation again, skipping the warning step.

Q. What is Suspension?

Grade suspension occurs when a student is on grade probation and the next semester/term their grade point average or cumulative grade point average falls below 2.00. When a person is suspended from the university, they are not allowed to continue enrollment.

Q. What can I do to get off probation?

You have to get your semester/term and cumulative grade point average above 2.00 for the next term in order to get off probation. In some cases it is required that you meet with an academic counselor during the semester to help you learn ways to improve your academic performance.

Q. How can I get my registration unblocked, if it is blocked by Counseling Services?

You must meet with a counselor and evaluate what the problem is. Then you work with the counselor to develop a plan and show a commitment to following your plan.

Q. If I am having problems studying or concentrating what can I do?

You can contact a counselor in Counseling services to learn new study strategies, or you can take STDEV 101 to teach you to be a better student.
