Terms and Conditions
Students receiving Federal Aid are required to read, understand and agree to the following "Terms and Conditions" of the awards:
- Students may use funds listed on their award notice only for educational-related expenses incurred at BYU-Hawaii for the respective academic year.
- The University applies financial aid awards directly to charges on the student’s account (including tuition, fees, housing, and other charges). Funds in excess of these charges are released to the student. This is called a "refund". If subsequent charges are made to the student’s university account, it is the student’s responsibility to pay them. See Federal Aid Disbursement Information.
- Financial aid awarded for a specific term can only pay for charges for that term and the aid can only be disbursed to the student’s account during that same term.
- Students must be enrolled in a regular degree-seeking program at BYU-Hawaii in order to receive financial aid awards at BYU-Hawaii.
- Students must maintain the enrollment status (minimum number of credit hours) specified by each award or they could lose all or part of the award.
- Students are responsible for repaying any financial assistance received which cannot reasonably be attributed to meeting educational expenses at BYU-Hawaii.
- The repayment of Federal Aid is based on federal regulations published by the U.S. Department of Education.
- Students must immediately inform the BYU-Hawaii Financial Aid office of any additional funds received that are not listed on the award notice (external scholarships, Kam schools scholarships, veteran’s benefits, etc).
- In order to retain federal aid awards students must exhibit Satisfactory Academic Progress.
- Each year students must re-submit a FAFSA and other documents to be considered for Federal Aid. Awards will be recalculated according to the new information submitted each year.
Loan Counseling
Students who have been offered Stafford Loans are required to complete loan entrance counseling before they are certified for the loan. This insures that they understand the responsibilities and obligations that accompany loans. Topics include interest rates, debt management, deferments, repayment rates, loan balances, and obligations regarding payment. This will enable them to determine if federal aid is the right path for them to take in paying for their education. Students can access loan counseling on-line.
If a student decides to accept a Stafford Loan, he will be required to complete an exit counseling session before graduation to remind him of his financial responsibilities. University privileges are suspended if exit counseling is not completed.
Repaying Loans
Because students must repay student loans and interest, they should not borrow more money than they need to finance their education. They need to know the interest rate for their loans and when the interest begins to accrue.

Pell Grants
Pell Grants do not need to be repaid unless the student’s enrollment status changes during the semester. More information on Pell Grants.
