Seasiders Keep Winning

Julia Ustyuzhanina (shown at last spring's national tournament) advanced to the semifinals at the ITA West Regionals

La Jolla, CA-Brigham Young University Hawaii's Julia Ustyuzhanina and Ramona Husaru continued their winning ways today at the Wilson/ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) West Regionals. The Seasiders won a pair of doubles matches to advance to tomorrow's championship match and both advanced in singles play as well. The Seasiders are seeded one and two in singles and number one in doubles.

Ustyuzhanina, the top single's seed, powered past Renee Paquillo of Cal Poly Pomona 6-1, 6-0 to advance to tomorrow's semifinal where she will meet another Cal Poly player, fourth-seeded Jenny Tsai. Husaru, seeded second, routed Cal State-LA's Bojana Ducanovich 6-1, 6-0 in her quarterfinal match and then defeated Krishana De Silva, also of Cal State-LA, 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the finals tomorrow. Should Ustyuzhanina prevail in her semifinal tomorrow, the two Seasiders will face each other for the regional title.

In doubles play the Seasider duo trounced Isis Jackson and Jennifer Avila of Cal State-LA 8-1 in the quarterfinals and then whitewashed Rona Miller and Ducanovich of Cal State-LA 8-0 in the semifinals. The tournament concludes tomorrow and the winners will advance to the Wilson/ITA National Championships to be played in October.
