Seasiders Win Regional

Maggie Deng watches a shot during today's singles play

Laie, HI—The top-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s tennis team shook off the rust of not having played a match for 25 days to defeat UC San Diego in the NCAA II West Regional Tennis Tournament today to earn a trip to the national tournament. The Seasiders swept all three doubles matches and then picked up wins at number two and number five singles to roll to the 5-0 win and improve to 26-0 for the season. BYU–Hawaii has won 86 consecutive dual matches during its latest winning streak.

Elwen Li and Maggie Deng claimed an 8-3 win at the top doubles spot and Becky Lu and Ramona Husaru took an 8-4 win at number two doubles as did Jenny Chin and Ayako Ikeda at the third doubles spot to stake BYU–Hawaii to the early lead. Deng then romped to a 6-0, 6-1 win at number two singles while Chin finished off a 6-1, 6-2 win at the fifth singles slot to secure the victory. BYU–Hawaii was leading in the other four singles matches when play was halted.

BYU–Hawaii Head Coach Dave Porter said he was happy with the win. “I was a little disappointed in the way we started in the double matches, but we picked it up and played better in the singles matches,” he said. “UC San Diego is a solid team so this was a good win for us.”

The Seasiders now advance to the NCAA II National Tournament to be played in Houston, Texas and running from May 14th through the 17th. Coach Porter said he was looking forward to the challenge of defending the Seasiders’ national title. “I’m excited but nervous about the national tournament,” he said. “I’m a little nervous about playing in the tournament with four freshmen in the lineup. We still have some work to do before we can control matches against really good teams.”
