Seasiders Defeat #4 Valdosta

Pensacola, FL—The top-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s tennis team defeated fourth-ranked Valdosta State today, 7-1, to improve to a perfect 20-0 for the season. The Seasiders swept all three doubles matches and took four of the five completed singles matches to extend their current winning streak to an even 80 matches.

In doubles play, Elwen Li and Maggie Deng took an 8-5 win at the top slot while Ramona Husaru and Becky Lu were defeating the nation’s 11th-ranked duo, Raphaelle Durante and Karine Redon, by an 8-6 score. Jenny Chin and Ayako Ikeda also won 8-6 at number three doubles for the Seasiders.

In singles play, top-ranked Li took a 6-1, 6-2 win over 24th-ranked Dominique Rothlaender at the first singles slot while fourth-ranked Deng won 6-2, 6-2 at number two singles over 16th-ranked Durante. Lu took a 6-0, 6-4 win at the fourth singles slot and Chin won 6-3, 7-6(3) at number five singles to round out the scoring for the Seasiders. Ramona Husaru was tied 5-5 in the first set with 21st-ranked Natali Gumbrecht when play was stopped and Ikeda suffered a close, 7-5, 4-6, (10-8) loss in a super tie-breaker at the sixth singles position.

BYU–Hawaii will face Delta State tomorrow in Pensacola, Florida.
