April 3, 2008 Top-Ranked Seasiders Drop West Florida
Pensacola, FL—The top-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s tennis team faced their toughest test of the season today and powered their way to a 7-2 victory over 16th-ranked West Florida in a match that was suspended by rain on April 1st. The Seasiders took two of the three doubles matches and then won five of the six singles matches to claim the win as they improved to 19-0 for the season and extended their current winning streak to 79 matches. In the doubles matches, that were started two days ago, BYU–Hawaii picked up wins by the ninth-ranked duo of Ramona Husaru and Becky Lu at number two doubles and by Jenny Chin and Ayako Ikeda at number three doubles. Both Seasider teams won by a score of 8-4. However, the Seasiders’ top ranked tandem of Elwen Li and Maggie Deng were upset, 8-6, by the third-ranked team of Suzanna Cavalcante and Paola Arevalo. In singles play, top-ranked Li took a 6-2, 6-1 win over seventh-ranked Cavalcante at the first singles slot while fourth-ranked Deng won 6-1, 6-2 at number two singles over Arevalo. Ramona Husaru, ranked 19th in the new rankings released today, defeated 34th-ranked Ranata Mattos, 3-6, 7-5, (10-6) in a super tie-breaker at number three singles and newly 12th-ranked Becky Lu took a 6-4, 6-3 win at number four singles for BYU–Hawaii. Jenny Chin, ranked 43rd nationally, breezed to a 6-2, 6-0 win at number five singles and Ayako Ikeda lost a super tie-breaker at number six singles, 4-6, 6-1, (10-5). BYU–Hawaii will face an even tougher task tomorrow as they take on fourth-ranked Valdosta State in Pensacola, Florida. Results: Singles: Doubles:
