Seasiders Open Tournament with Win

St. George, UT—The top-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s tennis team breezed past Chaminade today with a 9-0 sweep in the second round of the Hawaiian Airlines Pacific West Conference Tournament. The Seasiders, who received a first-round bye in the tournament as the top seed, won every match in straight sets as they improved to 24-0 for the season and won for the 84th consecutive time.

Three Seasiders, Elwen Li at number one, Jenny Chin at number four, and Ayako Ikeda at number five, won their singles matches with identical 6-0, 6-0 scores. Shenley Searing took a 6-2, 6-0 win at number six for BYU–Hawaii and Maggie Deng earned a 6-1, 7-5 win at the second singles slot. Becky Lu rounded out the singles play with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at number three singles.

Chin and Ikeda also shut out their opponents in doubles play with an 8-0 win at the third spot. Li and Deng won 8-2 at number one doubles and Lu and Ramona Husaru won by the same score at second doubles.

The Seasiders will play either UH-Hilo or Hawaii Pacific in tomorrow’s championship match in St. George, Utah.
