HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s tennis team had
a strong showing on the tennis courts today posting a 8-1 victory over visiting
Division 1 Illinois State in Laie. The number one nationally ranked Seasiders
were effective today by winning their matches against the visiting Redbirds
who have battled two tough nationally-ranked teams so far in the month of
March.
BYU-H started out strong with their #1 ranked seed Elwin Li who worked her
way past her opponent Katri Miller 6-2, 6-2 to get the Seasiders off on the
right foot. The bright spot for Illinois State was Julia Zubkova at the number
two doubles spot who managed to defeat Maggie Deng 6-3, 6-2. After that the
Seasiders bounced back and the duo of Li and Deng got some revenge as they
later won their doubles match in the number one spot 8-2 for the terrific
two-some.
Becky Lu and Ramona Husaru of BYU-H battled Zubkova and O’Riley
in a very tight doubles match at the number two spot where the Seasider
tandem
eked
out a 9-8 (3) victory in a tremendous match-up of the two doubles pairs.
Ayoko Ikeda and Jenny Chin for the Seasiders helped put the icing on the
cake in their doubles match by sweeping their opponents 8-0 at the number
three
doubles spot.
With the win the Seasiders move to 10-0 on the year and have won for an
outstanding 70th consecutive match. BYU-Hawaii plays the UH-Hilo Vulcans
on Monday March
17th in Laie at 2pm, which game will kick-off a challenging six game
stretch for the defending national champion Seasiders who will take on
six consecutive
opponents in six days this week.
