Coach Porter Gets 1,000th Win

BYU-Hawaii President Steven C. Wheelwright presented Coach Porter with letters of commendation from both the University and the Pacific West Conference

Laie, HI—Brigham Young University Hawaii Tennis Coach David Porter joined a very elite group of coaches today as his women’s tennis team defeated Dixie State today 9-0 to give Porter his 1,000th career win as a head coach. Porter, now in his 16th year leading the women’s program, won his 452nd match with the women to go with the 548 victories he has notched in just over 23 years with the men’s program to reach the milestone.

Today’s match saw the Seasiders sweep the six singles matches without losing more than two games in any of the matches and then breeze through the doubles matches in similar fashion. Jenny Chin scored a 6-0, 6-0 shutout at number five singles and then combined with Ayako Ikeda for an 8-0 whitewash at number two doubles. Top-ranked Elwen Li powered her way to a 6-1, 6-1 win at number one singles and then teamed with Maggie Deng for an 8-0 win at the top of the doubles matches. Deng claimed her singles win at the third spot with a 6-1, 6-0 mark which was matched by Ramona Husaru’s win at fourth singles. Becky Lu swept to a 6-1, 6-1 win at the second singles position and combined with Janelle Selfaison for an 8-3 win at third doubles. Shenley Searing rounded out the scoring with a 6-2, 6-0 win at number six singles for the Seasiders.

Porter’s milestone was achieved in a remarkably small number of contests as he reached the plateau in just 1,128 matches, making his overall record 1,000-128. His record with the women’s program is 452-13 and he has won nine national championships with the women’s team and two with the men’s team for eleven titles overall. Today’s win was the 68th in a row for the women’s team. Coach Porter’s women’s teams have previously recorded winning streaks of 103 and 130 consecutive matches.

Coach Porter said he was happy to have reached the milestone but was quick to give credit to his players. “It means you’ve been around a long time,” he said, “but it also means that you have had outstanding players who understood the value of coming to this great school and getting a wonderful education while also playing some great tennis. Each one of the many players who have played here own a part of this achievement.”

The Seasiders will face Emory (GA) tomorrow in Laie at 2:00 pm HST as Coach Porter goes for win number 1,001.
