February 7, 2008 Top-ranked Women Win Opener
Waipio, HI—The top-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s tennis team opened the season today with a 9-0 sweep of Chaminade for their 61st straight win. The Seasiders dropped just two games in sweeping the three doubles matches and won all six singles matches in straight sets. Freshman Ayako Ikeda didn’t lose a single game today as she swept her singles match at the number four spot, 6-0, 6-0, and combined with Becky Lu for an 8-0 doubles win at the second position. Sophomore Shenley Searing also scored a whitewash in singles with a 6-0, 6-0 win at number five and teamed with freshman walk-on Janelle Selfaison for an 8-1 win at third doubles. Number-one-ranked Elwin Li took a 6-3, 6-0 win at number one singles that was matched by sixth-ranked Maggie Deng’s victory at the second slot. The two combined for an 8-1 win at number one doubles where they are ranked as the top duo in NCAA II play. Lu won her match at the third doubles slot, 6-0, 6-4, and Selfiason won her first collegiate singles match 6-3, 6-1 in the number six position. The Seasiders will face 11th-ranked NCAA III member Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday in Laie at noon HST. Results: Singles: Doubles:
