October 13, 2007 Li Wins Title
Mobile, AL—Brigham Young University Hawaii’s Elwen Li completed a sweep of the NCAA II titles today at the ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) National Tournament when she won the singles title to go with the doubles title she won yesterday with partner Maggie Deng. In today’s singles final Li defeated second-seeded Johanna Dahlback of Armstrong Atlantic State, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, to claim the title. The ITA National Tournament brings together eight regional winners for the tournament in all of the small college divisions and culminates with a Small College Super Bowl matching the champions from the NCAA II, NCAA III, NAIA, and NJCAA against each other. However, because the finals of the Small College Super Bowl are scheduled to played on Sunday Li immediately withdrew from that part of the competition in order to allow the Dahlback to represent NCAA II in that portion of the tournament. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the sponsoring institution of BYU–Hawaii, recognizes Sunday as a Holy Sabbath and BYU–Hawaii does not engage in any athletic competitions on Sundays. The Seasiders also withdrew from the doubles portion of the Small College Super Bowl. Results: Singles: |
