Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s soccer team battled the nation’s third-ranked team toe-to-toe today before losing a tough 1-0 decision to UC San Diego. The Seasiders, in just their second year of women’s soccer, gave the powerhouse Tritons all they could handle, especially in the second half when the Seasiders outshot the visitors 4-2 and continually put pressure on the UC San Diego defense. However, the Tritons held on for the win to improve to 3-0 for the season while the Seasiders fell to 0-2-1 for the year.

UC San Diego scored the games only goal in the 13th minute of the first half, a half in which the Tritons outshot the Seasiders 8-1. Natasha Belak-Berger got the unassisted goal and the two teams settled into a tense but scoreless battle for the rest of the contest. Both goal keepers had just two saves apiece as the defenses for both teams did not allow too many good scoring opportunities.

BYU–Hawaii Head Coach Justin Wagar said he was proud of how his team played. “I told the girls to be aggressive and they were. They played hard and did well against one of the best teams in the nation,” he said.

BYU Hawaii’s next action will be against Chaminade on Saturday in Laie at 10:00 am HST.
