September 15, 2007Haar Hat Trick Sparks Win
Laie, HI—Senior captain Jill Haar scored three goals to lead a five-goal second-half explosion that propelled the Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s soccer team to a 6-1 win over Northwood (TX) today at the BYU–Hawaii soccer field. Tied 1-1 at the half, the Seasiders peppered Northwood with 12 shots after the break, netting five of them, to break the game open and improve to 2-2-1 for the season. Northwood scored first in the game, getting a goal from Klara Sandquist in the 23rd minute. Ashley Hunter tied things up for the Seasiders just before intermission in the 43rd minute. BYU–Hawaii came out strong in the second half, with Stefanie Wright putting the Seasiders ahead in the 47th minute off a pass from Hailey McKee. Haar scored on a free kick at the 77th minute and the stole the ball shortly after the ensuing kickoff and scored on a breakaway from straight in during the 78th minute. Hunter added her second goal of the day on a rebound shot in the 81st minute and Haar completed the scoring and the hat trick off a pass from Wright in the 83rd minute. Becky Ploeger started in goal for BYU–Hawaii and made two saves in 87 minutes of play. Macy Halladay replaced Ploeger with three minutes to play and stopped a Northwood penalty kick for her only save of the match. BYU Hawaii’s next action will be on the road against Grand Canyon on Tuesday in Phoenix at 5:30 pm MST. |
