Seasiders Fall 2-1 to Eagles

Jill Haar scores the go ahead goal to put the Seasiders up 1-0 on her birthday

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s soccer team gave a valiant effort, but a first half red card proved too much to overcome as Concordia (CA) came from behind to pull of a 2-1 upset victory today over the Seasiders. BYU Hawaii took a 1-0 lead in the 38th minute on a beautiful goal by senior Captain Jill Haar, who was assisted on the play by defender Kristina Nibley.

Haar scored by running down a thru ball and racing behind two Concordia defenders to capitalize on a 30 yard breakaway as she powered the ball in past the keeper. The Seasiders kept the pressure on until the final minute of the first half when one of the Seasider defenders grabbed a player’s jersey from behind in the corner of the 18 box and was called for a straight red card on the play. Concordia made the ensuing penalty kick to tie things up 1-1 heading into half time.

Rather than calling it quits, BYU–Hawaii came out in the second half with renewed vigor and determination to stay in the game. For the first 30 minutes of the second half, despite being down a player, the young Seasiders did stay even with the Eagles. However, in the 85th minute Concordia scored the game winner off a corner kick scramble in front of the goal.

Both goal keepers for the match had two saves apiece, and the Seasiders led the Eagles 6-2 for the game on corner kicks. “This was a very hard played aggressive defensive battle for both teams,” said BYU–Hawaii Head Coach Justin Wagar. “I am not pleased with the final score, but I am proud of how our girls didn’t hang their heads and throw in the towel when we gave up that penalty kick and went a player down. I give credit to them for pulling together as a team, and playing with a lot of grit and courage the rest of the way.”

The loss was BYU Hawaii’s first of the season, and they will take on the 5th ranked team in the nation, UC San Diego, this upcoming Tuesday in Laie at 4:00 pm HST.
