Seasiders Tie CWU

Jill Haar (behind Kristi Astin) came out of this battle for the ball to score the tying goal in today's match

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University-Hawaii Women’s Soccer team opened the season today with a 3-3 tie against Central Washington. BYU–Hawaii, 0-0-1 for the season, led at halftime 2-1 but the Wildcats came back with two second half goals to take the lead before the Seasiders’ Jill Haar tied the game in the 86th minute to force overtime. The Seasiders and Wildcats, now 1-0-1 for the season, played two overtime periods but neither team came up with a score after regulation play.

After a listless first 20 minutes in which the two teams seemed to be just feeling each other out, the Wildcats’ Kelsey Penn lofted a long shot over the head of BYU–Hawaii goalie Becky Ploeger to stake Central Washington to a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute. Freshman Sarah Welty scored on a breakaway off a pass from Hailey McKee12 minutes later to tie it up for the Seasiders and BYU–Hawaii took the lead on a goal by another freshman, Stefanie Wright, off a long throw-in by freshman Alexa Page with less than three minutes to go in the half.

Central Washington tied the game in the 56th minute on a goal by Kaycie Hutchins and took the lead in the 76th minute on a goal by Ellie Eckroth. However, with time running short on the Seasiders, Page made another excellent long throw-in and, after the ball was kicked around a bit, Haar came out of the pack with the ball and tied it up with a short kick from directly in front of the goal.

Neither team got off a shot in the first overtime period but with just over a minute left in the second overtime the Seasiders just missed on a golden opportunity to win the game as Welty hit the left post on what appeared to be a sure game winner and then hit the same post again a second later when the ball rebounded right back at her.

The Seasiders will face Concordia (CA) on Thursday in Laie at 2:30 pm.
