November 2, 2007BYUH Wins to End Season
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s soccer team defeated Notre Dame de Namur today, 4-1, in the final Pacific West Conference match of the season for both teams. The Seasiders, now 13-6-1 overall and 10-2 in the conference, now await the outcome of Saturday’s match between Dixie State and UH-Hilo that will determine the conference champion. If the Vulcans (8-3 in the conference) can topple the visiting Rebels of Dixie State (9-1-1 in the PacWest), BYU–Hawaii will win the conference championship. Notre Dame de Namur, last year’s conference champions but just 6-6 in the PacWest this season and 7-12-1 overall, opened the scoring in today’s match, getting a goal from Ashlee Hinojosa off an assist by Erin Morrison in the 24th minute to take a 1-0 lead into halftime despite getting only a single shot on goal during the opening period. The Seasiders struck quickly to open the second half, however, tying the game in the 47th minute on a header by Stefanie Wright with an assist from Jill Haar and Kristi Astin. Haar scored the go-ahead goal a few minutes later, in the 51st minute, finessing the ball past the goal keeper with assists from Becky Ploeger and Sarah Welty. In the 66th minute the Seasiders made it 3-1 on a penalty kick by Kristi Astin following an Argonaut foul from behind in the box. Haar tacked on the final goal of the day when she blasted a shot into the side netting during the 88th minute of play to cap the scoring for the day. The defensive effort for BYU-Hawaii matched the offenses efficiency in the second half as they clamped down on NDNU to only allow one shot on goal during the final 45 minute of play. Following the game the BYU–Hawaii fans and players honored three seniors, Haar, Sarah Norton, and Chanta’l Babcock, who played their final match as Seasiders, with leis and framed photographs from their experiences with the team. BYU–Hawaii Head Coach Justin Wagar said, “We had another excellent year as a soccer program at BYU–Hawaii. These young women were a fun and exciting bunch to coach and to watch, and it was an honor being able to work with them for yet another year. We are excited for what the future holds for this program and the challenges that lie ahead with each new season. It was a lot of fun”
