Seasiders Lose Heartbreaker

Agnes Tuilevuka (shown in earlier action) scored 21 points tonight

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s basketball team forced overtime with a clutch three-pointer by freshman Richelle Fenenbock, but couldn’t sustain the momentum and lost to Dixie State tonight, 84-79, in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders lost despite a record-setting performance by freshman Lei Lolohea, who scored 33 points to set a new BYU–Hawaii record for a women’s game.

The Seasiders took a 32-26 lead at halftime, after trailing by six points early in the game, and held the lead through most of the second half. However, the Lady Rebels took a 55-52 lead with 8:26 to play only to see the Seasiders wrest the lead back and go up by five at 62-57 with just under five minutes left in the game. The two squads then exchanged the lead three more times until Dixie State 70-67 with time running out. Fenenbock then got loose for a three-pointer from the left side and drained it with nine seconds left and, after a Dixie State three went awry, send the game to overtime. The Lady Rebels scored first in the overtime and never trailed the rest of the period as the Seasiders fell just short of the upset.

Lolohea shot 10-14 from the field and from the free throw line and was 3-3 from three-point range as she broke the school record of 30 points set by Latoya Wily in the last game of the season last year. Lolohea, who came off the bench in the game, also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds in just 24 minutes of play.

Agnes Tuilevuka scored 21 points for the Seasiders and grabbed six rebounds while Fenenbock finished with 17 points and four steals. Zori Drew handed out five assists and snared seven rebounds for BYU–Hawaii and Shaina Siliga dished out a team-high six assists in the game.

Lindsey Chettinger scored 23 points to lead the Lady Rebels, now 13-10 for the year and 9-5 in the PacWest. Jessica Carver had 19 points, Jessica Jones got 18, and Deney Phommabout had 11 for Dixie State. BYU–Hawaii dropped to 4-20 overall and 4-11 in the conference with the loss.

The Seasiders will face Chaminade on Saturday in Laie at 5:30 pm HST.
