St. George, UT—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women’s basketball team lost on the road tonight, losing to Dixie State 73-53 in Pacific West Conference action. The Seasiders, now 2-14 overall and 2-5 in the PacWest, out-shot and out-rebounded the Rebels but couldn’t overcome 36 turnovers and a 17-42 disparity in free throw attempts. BYU–Hawaii trailed 35-23 at the half and could never close the gap as Dixie State improved to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in the PacWest. The Seasiders shot 43.8 percent (21-48) from the field to 38.6 percent (22-57) for the Rebels and finished with a 45-36 advantage in rebounds but the Rebels committed 15 fewer turnovers (21) than the Seasiders and hit 12 more free throws than BYU–Hawaii with both teams shooting poorly from the line. Dixie was just 50 percent (21-42) from the charity stripe while the Seasiders were not much better at 52.9 percent on 9-17 shooting. Lei Lolohea scored ten points to lead BYU–Hawaii and also pulled down six rebounds. Niva Fanene tallied nine points and grabbed seven rebounds in just 12 minutes of play for the Seasiders. Felisita Ika and Shaina Siliga each scored seven points and Agnes Tuilevuka added six points and seven rebounds in the loss. Deney Phommabout scored 21 points for Dixie State and Courtney Boyd added 11. Jessica Jones had seven assists and Dani Newell seven rebounds for the Rebels. The Seasiders will face Dixie State again tomorrow in St. George, Utah at 5:30 pm MST. |
