Doering Shuts Down Vulcans

Bettye Anne Doering (shown in earlier action) silenced UH-Hilo's bats today

Waipio, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii softball team defeat UH-Hilo 3-1 in the first game of a split doubleheader today at Central Oahu Regional Park in Pacific West Conference play. The Vulcans came back to take the evening contest 7-1.

The Seasiders rode a strong pitching performance by Bettye Anne Doering and a big first inning to the win in the 2:00 pm game. Doering scattered five hits and gave up just an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh inning in going the distance for the Seasiders for the win. BYU–Hawaii got on the scoreboard early to stake Doering to a lead. Melissa Lehano led off the game with a single and Leslie Fester followed with a bunt single while Lehano went to third on a throwing error by the Vulcans. Another UH-Hilo error on Crystal De La Cruz’ ground ball loaded the bases with no outs. Lehano was forced at home on a fielder’s choice by Doering but Katresha Veazie followed with a double to deep right center to score Fester and De La Cruz. Kahealani Alohikea-Betham then singled down the right field line to send Doering home for a 3-0 lead. Doering made it hold up with her outstanding pitching to give the Seasiders the victory.

The Seasiders managed just two hits in game two while the Vulcans scored all their runs on three home runs to take the win. BYU–Hawaii scored its lone run, by Brooke Perriton, on a pair of UH-Hilo errors in the third inning without the benefit of a hit. Jerica Faasua hit a two-run homer in the first, Kanani Numata hit a three-run shot in the third, and Brittany Dock added a two-run home in the fifth for the Vulcan scoring. Amanda May picked up the win for UH-Hilo and Veazie went the distance for the Seasiders in the loss.

BYU–Hawaii now stands at 9-32 for the season and 6-18 in the PacWest while UH-Hilo is at 9-9 overall and 8-8 in the conference.

The Seasiders will face Chaminade in the final games of the season on Tuesday at Central Oahu Regional Park at 4:30 pm.
