Seasiders Lose a Pair

Katresha Veazie struck out six Grand Canyon hitters in today's first game

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii softball team got a strong pitching performance from junior Katresha Veazie today but it went for naught as the Seasiders lost both ends of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader today, falling to Grand Canyon 2-0 and 11-0. Veazie went the distance in the first game, allowing just four singles while striking out a season-high six, but fell victim to unearned runs in the fifth and seventh innings to take the loss.

While Veazie was shutting down the Lady ‘Lopes, the Seasiders were being held to just four singles as well by Grand Canyon pitcher Megan Niver. Melissa Lehano, who leads the Seasiders in hitting this season, got two of the hits for BYU–Hawaii in game one.

Grand Canyon scored three times in the first inning, three more in the third, and five times in the sixth to close out game two on the eight-run rule. Michelle Ferrell limited BYU–Hawaii to four hits, two by senior Leslie Fester who finished with three hits for the day, to shut down the Seasiders. Bettye Doering went most of the way on the mound for the Seasiders before Veazie came in to get the last out. Only three of Grand Canyon’s runs in the second game were earned.

BYU–Hawaii now stands at 3-16 for the season and 2-4 in the PacWest while Grand Canyon improved to 7-8-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

BYU–Hawaii will face Grand Canyon again tomorrow in Laie beginning at 1:00 pm HST in a conference doubleheader.
