Seasiders Drop Openers

Margaret Gnadt (shown in last year's action) went 1-3 for the Seasiders today in California

Riverside, CA—The Brigham Young University Hawaii women's softball team opened the 2008 season today with a pair of losses on the road to NAIA power Cal Baptist. The Seasiders were shutout 8-0 in the opener before dropping the second game 10-2 to start the year 0-2.

BYU–Hawaii managed just four singles off Cal Baptist pitcher Amy Thomas in the opening game that was shortened to five innings by the eight-run rule. Melissa Lehano got two of the Seasiders’ hits in the game.

The Seasiders scored twice in the top of the first inning of game two to take a short-lived lead. Lehano led off the inning with a single and went to third when Leslie Fester’s sacrifice attempt resulted in a Lancer error that left runners at the corners. Kimberly Artiaga drove Lehano home with a sacrifice fly and Fester advanced to second on another Cal Baptist error. Kahealani Alohikea-Betham then singled home Fester and it appeared that the Seasiders were in for a good game at the plate. But Alohikea-Betham’s hit was the last of the game for the Seasiders and the Lancers scored four runs in the bottom of the first and another four in the second to take complete control of the game. Game two also ended after five innings on the eight-run rule.

Lehano, a junior from Mililani, Hawaii, provided the brightest spot for the Seasiders, going 3-6 for the day and scoring one of the two runs. Margaret Gnadt and Kerissa Clifford got the other two hits for the Seasiders in the first game. Katresha Veazie took the loss in the first game and Bettye Doering dropped the second. Both pitchers were victimized by three unearned runs.

The Seasiders will face Concordia (CA) tomorrow in a non-conference doubleheader in Irvine, California at 12:00 pm PST.
