February 18, 2008 Seasiders Lose in Extra Innings
Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii softball team battled Hawaii Pacific into extra innings today but came out a little short, losing game one of a non-conference doubleheader 10-9 in eight innings. Hawaii Pacific won the second game of the twinbill 10-0 in five innings. The Seasiders got off to a fast start in the opener, scoring five runs in the first inning to take a 5-1 lead. BYU–Hawaii added four more runs in the third to take a 9-3 lead but that ended the scoring for the day for the Seasiders and Hawaii Pacific came back with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth before tying the game on a three-run home run by Puna Waiolama with two out in the top of the seventh. The Sea Warriors won the game on an RBI groundout by Tajia Acierto in the eighth. Melissa Lehano started things off for the Seasiders in the first with a walk and advanced to second on Leslie Fester’s single. One out later, Kimberly Artiaga singled to load the bases and pitcher Bettye Doering followed with a two-run single up the middle. After Margaret Gnadt loaded the bases again with a single, Kerissa Clifford delivered a two-out bases-clearing triple to left. In the bottom of the third Doering led off with a walk and Gnadt doubled to right-center. Brooke Perriton followed with an RBI single and Athena Salinas reached on a Sea Warrior throwing error that scored Gnadt and advanced Perriton to third. After Salinas stole second Lehano brought Perriton and Salinas both home with a single to right. Doering went the distance on the mound for the Seasiders. Hawaii Pacific scored
five times in the first inning and added four more in the second
and one in the third to support the no-hit pitching
of
Courtney Kessell. Kessell struck out six, walked none, and only allowed
one baserunner,
on an error, in the five-inning game that was shortened by the eight-run
rule. The Seasiders will face Regina (Canada) in a pair of exhibition games Wednesday in Laie beginning at 1:00 pm HST. |
