February 12, 2008 Alohikea-Betham Homers Again
Costa Mesa, CA—Kahealani Alohikea-Betham continued her early season power surge today, smashing a three-run home run in the top of the first inning of the second game, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Brigham Young University Hawaii softball team from falling twice to Vanguard, 4-0 and 6-3 in a non-conference doubleheader. Alohikea-Betham, a freshman from Ewa Beach who prepped at Kamehameha, hit her third home run of the season after consecutive walks to Melissa Lehano and Leslie Fester but Katresha Veazie’s two-out double later in the inning proved to be the final hit of the day for the Seasiders. Margaret Gnadt hit a second-inning double to left in the first game to provide the only BYU–Hawaii hit off Vanguard senior Jennifer Olvera, who struck out 13 hitters in six innings for the win. Bethany Dempster pitched the seventh inning and then Kelsey Boyer went the first five innings in the second game before yielding the mound to Olvera for the last two innings of that game. Veazie and Bettye Doering both pitched well for the Seasiders. Veazie gave up just three earned runs as she went the distance in the first game and Doering yielded only two earned runs in a complete game two. The Seasiders will face Hawaii Pacific on Monday in a non-conference doubleheader in Laie beginning at noon HST. |
