BYUH Splits

Laie, HI- The Brigham Young University-Hawaii women's softball team split a doubleheader with Eastern Oregon today, winning the first game 4-3 in eight innings before dropping the second game 8-0 in six innings.

The Seasiders won the first game, despite being outhit six to four by the Mountaineers, by scratching and clawing for runs. BYU-Hawaii scored first, in the bottom of the second, by putting together a hit batsman, a walk, a fielder's choice, a stolen base and an error by the Mountaineer's shortstop.

Eastern Oregon tallied three times in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead by putting three of their hits and a walk together. But the Seasiders closed the gap to one on a bases loaded groundout by Andrea Andersen in the sixth that followed a pair of walks and a Michelle Gibson single. BYU-Hawaii tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Susanna Wilcox after a pair of singles and a fielder's choice filled the bases.

The Seasiders won the game in the first extra inning without getting a hit. Gibson led off with a walk and was sacrificed to second by Andersen. Gibson went to third on an illegal pitch call and scored on a wild pitch to end the game.

Eastern Oregon took advantage of three BYU-Hawaii errors to score seven unearned runs in the third inning of the second game and coasted to an easy win that was ended by the eight-run rule. The Seasiders managed only two hits in the game while yielding ten to the visiting Mountaineers.

With the split, the Seasiders record moves to 8-17 on the year. The Seasiders take to the road next for a pair of weekend doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday at Montana State-Billings.
