Hood, Vega Stop Sea Warriors

Laie, HI-Brigham Young University-Hawaii freshman pitcher Kassiopeia Hood pitched her second shutout in as many days and senior leftfielder Juanita Vega ended a long Seasider homerun drought as BYU-Hawaii defeated Hawaii Pacific 2-0 today in the first game of a scheduled doubleheader. The second game was called due to rain.

Hood followed up yesterday's one-hit gem over Chaminade with a four-hitter over the visiting Sea Warriors. Her control was excellent throughout the game, as she did not walk anyone while striking out seven. The Sea Warriors were never able to advance a runner past second base against Hood.

Vega provided all the offense the Seasiders needed, singling and scoring the team's first run in the second inning on a throwing error during a double steal attempt. She provided insurance with a home run over the left field fence in the sixth. The homer was the first by a BYU-Hawaii player since Melinda Clarke stroked one on March 28, 2000 against Belmont (Calif.) on the road. Senior Lyza Halas clubbed the last BYU-Hawaii homerun in Laie back when she was a freshman on March 18, 1999 against Park (Mo.).

With the win BYU-Hawaii improves to 7-10 overall and 4-3 in the Pacific West Conference. The Seasiders will take to the road for a pair of games with UH-Hilo on Wednesday.
