March 3, 2007Seasiders Squeak by Sea Warriors
Laie, HI-The 15th-ranked Brigham Young University Hawaii men's tennis team defeated 33rd-ranked Hawaii Pacific today in a rain-delayed match by a 5-4 final score. The match, which was as intensely played as a post-season playoff match, came down to the final singles match before the Seasiders prevailed. BYU-Hawaii took two of the three doubles matches and then won at numbers two, four, and five in singles play to complete the win and improve to 4-0 for the season. Tomas Hladil and Jakub Huza claimed an 8-3 win at number two doubles while Marvin So'onalole and Chris Rice were taking an 8-5 win at the third doubles slot to give BYU-Hawaii the lead after double play. Junyoung Kim and Junichi Shimoda were beaten at the top double slot by Hawaii Pacific's Hendrik Bode and Anton Samuilau, 8-5. Rice put the Seasiders ahead 3-1 by defeating Daniel Llarenas at number five singles, 6-2, 6-2, but the Sea Warriors closed the gap quickly when Mark Mestan completed a 6-0, 6-3 win over Huza at the third singles spot. Hawaii Pacific tied the match shortly thereafter with a victory at number six singles, where Jan Hroch defeated BYU-Hawaii's Victor De Garay, 6-3, 6-2. So'onalole put the Seasiders back on top, 4-3, by winning a hotly-contested match at number four singles, 7-5, 6-2 over Peter Raben. However, the Sea Warriors rallied back from a one-set deficit at both of the top singles slots to push both matches to a third game. At number one singles Bode completed his comeback with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Kim to knot the match at four points apiece. Hladil finally prevailed at number two singles with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Samuilau in a very spirited match to give BYU-Hawaii the deciding point.
