September 8, 2007Seasiders Win Cup in OT
Maui, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s soccer team defeated UH-Hilo 4-3 tonight in double overtime to claim the title at the Hawaii Collegiate Challenge Cup. Freshman Trent Read netted the game winner for the Seasiders, who improved to 4-1 for the season with the win. After a scoreless first half, the two teams exploded for six goals in the second period. Shawn Blymiller scored the first two goals for the Seasiders, the first coming on passes from Brian Noguera and Michael Akinaka and the second off an assist from Noguera. Sam Akinaka knocked in the third BYU–Hawaii goal with an assist from Luis Ayala. BYU–Hawaii held a 3-1 lead with under ten minutes to go in the game but the Vulcans, now 3-4 for the season, scored twice to tie it with the tying goal coming with just one second left in the match. The teams played a scoreless first overtime, but seven minutes into the second extra period Read put an end to the match with his game winner. BYU–Hawaii will face Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona on September 17th at 7:00 pm MST in its next match. |
