Seasiders Drop Swords

Trent Read (shown in earlier action) kicked in the game-winner just before dark today

Honolulu, HI—For the second time this season Brigham Young University Hawaii freshman Trenton Read scored a game-winning goal in overtime to give the Seasider men’s soccer team a win. Today Read’s victim was Chaminade as the Seasiders rallied from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat the Silverswords 2-1 in Pacific West Conference action.

Read banged home a rebound in the 109th minute of the second overtime to give the Seasiders a last-minute win in a game they dominated statistically. BYU–Hawaii out-shot Chaminade 34-5 and held a 13-2 edge in corner kicks, but a strong performance by Silversword goalie Darren Smith, who saved 11 shots, kept the outcome in doubt until Read’s shot.

Chaminade scored quickly to start the game, getting a goal from Jason Gomez in the fifth minute and holding on for the halftime lead. The Seasiders tied the game just after the start of the second half on a goal by Adam Maciejewski off an assist by Michael Akinaka in the 53rd minute.

With the win, BYU–Hawaii improves to 6-6 overall and 2-1 in the PacWest while Chaminade drops to 2-8-1 overall.

BYU–Hawaii will face Hawaii Pacific on Thursday at 4:00 pm HST in Kaneohe in another PacWest matchup.
