Seasider Comeback Falls Short

Brian Noguera (shown in earlier action) scored the Seasiders' only goal in today's match

Santa Cruz, CA—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s soccer team lost to UC Santa Cruz, 2-1, today in the third match of a grueling, six-game road trip. The Seasiders fell behind 2-0 at the half and, despite playing a strong second half, fell short at the end to fall to 4-4 for the season.

The hometown Banana Slugs got goals in the 15th and 18th minutes in the opening period before the BYU–Hawaii defense tightened up and shut down the Slugs for the rest of the game. Brian Noguera drilled a shot following a corner kick in the 45th minute to get the Seasiders within one just after the start of the second half, but neither team was able to score for the rest of the game.

BYU–Hawaii goalie Doug Hansen got three saves in the first half and Javier Vaca, who replaced Hansen at halftime, stopped two shots after the intermission for the Seasiders. The Seasiders totaled seven shots on goal to 13 for UC Santa Cruz.

BYU–Hawaii will face Notre Dame de Namur in a Pacific West Conference match on Saturday at 7:30 pm PDT in Belmont, California in their next action.
