Seasiders Win in OT

Adam Maciejewski watches his game winner settle into the net during today's overtime victory

Laie, HI—Freshman Adam Maciejewski knocked in a goal seven minutes into the first overtime to propel the Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s soccer team to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Chico State today in the season opener for the Seasiders. Senior Michael Akinaka passed the ball to Brian Noguera who finessed the ball to a wide open Maciejewski on the right of the goal. Maciejewski then booted the game winner across the goal mouth into the left corner to send the Seasider fans home happy.

Chico State surprised the Seasiders just seven minutes into the game with a goal by A.J. Carboneau off a long punt by goal keeper Brian Linne that bounced over the head of the Seasider defense and Carboneau beat BYU–Hawaii goalie Doug Hansen to the ball. The Seasiders evened the score in the 35th minute on a goal by junior Shawn Blymiller off an assist by Sam Akinaka. Neither team was able to score in the second half despite nine shots on goal, setting the stage for Maciejewski’s heroics.

Chico State outshot the Seasiders for the game by an 11-8 count. Hansen stopped three Chico shots, including a pair of saves that brought the crowd to its feet. Linne made two saves for the visitors.
