Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s soccer team lost a double overtime heartbreaker, 2-1, to Norte Dame de Namur today in Pacific West Conference action on the BYU–Hawaii soccer field. The visiting Argonauts won the game in the final minutes of the second sudden-death overtime period on a goal that was deflected by Seasider goalie Doug Hansen but struck the right post and caromed into the net. With the loss, the BYU–Hawaii season comes to an end with the Seasiders finishing at 9-10 overall and 5-5 in the PacWest. Notre Dame de Namur finishes with a record of 10-9-1 overall and 6-4 in the conference. After a scoreless first half, Notre Dame de Namur broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute on a goal by Emmanuel Vazquez following a corner kick by Edgar Rivas. The Seasiders knotted the score in the 83rd minute on a penalty kick by Mike Akinaka after he was fouled in the box while trying to get off a shot. The first ten-minute overtime period produced no goals but the Argonauts finally prevailed when Andres Caballero came out of a scramble near the BYU–Hawaii goal mouth to boot home the winner with an assist from Rivera. The game went back and forth and was bogged down by 54 foul calls between the two teams with BYU–Hawaii receiving a season-high 32 fouls. Both teams pushed the tempo of the game, which was played on a sloppy, muddy field, until the final minutes when fatigue was taking over. Following the game BYU–Hawaii honored its seniors with personal game pictures and flower leis for their commitment to the team and efforts over the past two years as Seasider players. The six Seasider seniors who were honored today were Mike Akinaka, Doug Hansen, Lance Ford, Brian Noguera, Louis Ayala, and Calton Nyowani. Also honored was Seasider student assistant Andrew Brown who played for the team last year and helped Coach Jeff Miller on the sidelines this season.
