Seasiders Fall to Defending Champs

Doug Hansen makes one of his eight saves during today's match

Laie, HI—The Brigham Young University Hawaii men’s soccer team lost to conference leader Grand Canyon, 2-0, today in Pacific West Conference action on the BYU–Hawaii soccer field. The Seasiders, now 9-9 for the season and 5-4 in the PacWest put up a good fight against the conference defending champions but came up just short as Grand Canyon improved to 11-4-4 for the season and 8-0-1 in the conference.

Grand Canyon scored the first goal of the game on a rocket-shot kick from straight on off the foot of Daniel Sabillon in the 22nd minute. Sabillon’s blasted a bouncing ball that ricocheted off the crossbar over the outstretched arms of Seasider goalie Doug Hansen and into the net. The score remained 1-0 until the 84th minute when Albert Escovar dribbled through a pair of Seasider defenders and beat Hansen one-on-one to produce the final score. Hansen made eight saves in the match for BYU–Hawaii.

BYU–Hawaii will face Notre Dame de Namur on Friday at 1:00 pm HST in Laie in another PacWest matchup that will be the final match of the season for the Seasiders.
