Coach Norman
Kaluhiokalani He came to BYU-Hawaii in 1973 as a professor in the physical education department and, that same year, coached the school's rugby team to the state championship of the Hawaii Rugby Federation. The following year, he coached the BYUH men's soccer team through one year in the NAIA. Soon thereafter, he turned his attention to the sport that had always been his favorite: distance running. Coach K started up the Seasider cross country program in the late 70's and guided the men's and women's teams through two decades of NAIA competition. During that time, each team won the HIAC championship, and Coach K served a term as District 29 Chairman for the NAIA. He relinquished responsibility for the men's team in 1996 and concentrated solely on coaching the women. That year, his team won the HIAC championship. In 1997, the Seasiders' final year of NAIA competition, two BYUH women went on to take first and fifth place at the Far West Region Championships. Coach K began coaching the men again in 1999. A native of Oahu, Coach K attended Castle High School in Kaneohe before attending BYU Hawaii (then Church College of Hawaii). He graduated with a degree in physical education in 1969 and headed straight to BYU-Provo, where he received his master's in P.E. a year later. In 1975, he received his EDD from BYU-Provo. Coach K continues to teach in the BYU-Hawaii exercise and sports science department. He and his wife, Laverne, have five children: Kekoa, Kaleo, Kuulei, Kanoe, and Kapoho. Contact the Coach: |
