Policies
What happens if I do not meet the requirements
of my scholarship?
If you do not meet the requirements of your scholarship, you may
lose any undisbursed portions of your scholarship. You may also
lose eligibility for following years if the award is a multi-year
award.
Can I defer my scholarship for a later
semester or year?
BYU-Hawaii scholarships may be deferred due to LDS missions, academic
approved internships, military service, or for medically documented serious illness or injury.
To receive consideration to have a scholarship deferred, complete the
Scholarship Deferment Form (22k PDF) and submit it to the Financial Aid
Office prior to the beginning of the deferment period. Scholarships may not be deferred for reasons of employment.
May I take fewer credits if I am working?
To be fair and consistent we require all students on scholarship
to be enrolled for at least 12 hours a semester and 6 hours
a term. While we recognize the financial pressures of many
students,
we do not
consider employment sufficient cause to make an exception to
established policy. Interestingly, several studies show that
part-time employment
does not adversely affect students' grades.
Am I expected to pay back my scholarship
in the future?
Although there is no legal obligation to repay a scholarship, the
University encourages all students who have benefited from the generosity
of others to make a similar investment when they are in a financial
position to do so. The University wholeheartedly endorses the concept
of replenishment for those have had the choice opportunity of attending
BYU-Hawaii and been so fortunate as to have received financial support.
How long am I able to receive scholarship
assistance?
A student is allowed a maximum of 10 semesters on scholarship and
awards. Spring and Summer term each shall be counted as one half
of a semester.
Can I use my scholarship all at once instead
of having it divided between the Fall and Winter semesters?
If your scholarship is awarded for two semesters, you may only use
one semester's allocation at a time. For example, two semesters
of a half-tuition scholarship may not be combined into full tuition
for one semester.
If I don't use all of my scholarship during
the year it was awarded, can I use the rest of it during the next
year?
If you do not use your scholarship in the academic year specified
in your award letter, you forfeit the balance and must reapply for
the following year's consideration. Additionally, scholarships may
not be transferred to other institutions.
Can I use my scholarship at BYU or BYU-Idaho?
BYU-Hawaii scholarships may not be transferred to BYU
or BYU-Idaho. The only exceptions
are a few Postgraduate private scholarships
that are offered.
