Thank You Letters
For Private and Donor-based Scholarships
Sample thank-you letter format
Many of the scholarships offered by BYU-Hawaii are funded from accounts established by contributions of many friends of the University. These donors have given generously to help students complete their college education so that they can “enter the University to learn” and then “go forth to serve”. It is a fortunate blessing to be able to have these resources available to help students pay for their education.
In order to maintain good relationships with our donors, the University has established a method to “return and report” to the donors on how their funds have been used. Each donor is provided with a year-end account summary that includes the names of scholarship recipients and the amount of each award. Included with each report is a thank-you letter from each scholarship recipient. The thank-you letter allows the recipient to tell a little about herself, her future plans, and to express gratitude to the donor.
Most Private scholarship applications require an essay to be submitted with the application. The essay is used as a thank-you letter in the event that the applicant is selected as a scholarship recipient.
Other donor-based funds do not require an essay at the time of application. In these situations, recipients are notified either in their award letter or via email of the requirement to submit a thank-you letter to the Financial Aid office.
If a student does not submit a thank-you letter, scholarship funds may be withheld until the requirement is completed.
