National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant

The following information is subject to change as ongoing clarification is received from the Department of Education regarding this new program.

 

The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent (SMART) Grants are awarded based on financial need and a set of academic qualification criteria noted below. These grants are not loans and do not need to be repaid. National SMART Grants are for up to $4,000 per academic year for the third and fourth years of academic study.

 

Eligibility Requirements

To establish and maintain eligibility, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S. Citizen (not a permanent resident or any other BCIS status).
  • Be a Federal Pell Grant recipient.
  • Be enrolled full-time in a degree program.
  • Be enrolled in a four-year, degree-granting institution.
  • Be enrolled in third or fourth academic year of program of study.
  • The BYU-Hawaii Registrar has identified the following five programs (majors) as being eligible for SMART grant consideration. Student majoring in these programs do not need to contact the Financial Aid office. Eligibility will automatically be determined.

    1. Biological Sciences
    2. Biochemistry
    3. Computer Science
    4. Information Systems
    5. Mathematics

Please note that Chemistry Education, Math Education, Biological Science - Preprofessional, and all other majors are not eligible for this grant.

 

  • Have a cumulative 3.0 GPA at the end of each enrollment period.
  • Eligible Transfer students in their first enrollment period will have their GPA calculated using grades that were accepted for transfer to BYU-Hawaii.
  • SMART Grant recipients must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher to be eligible for each disbursement period.
