3) National SMART Grant (National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant)

4) Stafford Loans (Subsidized and Unsubsidized)

Basic Eligibility

Federal Financial Aid at BYU-Hawaii requires that students:
1. Must have a high school diploma or its recognized equivalent
2. Be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or U.S. national (International students in the U.S. on an F or J visa are not eligible for Federal Student Aid)
3. Be admitted to BYU-Hawaii in a degree-seeking program
4. Be making Satisfactory Academic Progress in their course of study
5. Not be in default on a federal student loan or owe a refund on a federal grant for attendance at any institution
Students enrolled as visiting or non-degree seeking are not eligible for federal aid, scholarships, or any other financial aid.

Application Process and Timing
In order to determine eligibility for Pell Grant and Stafford Loans, each student must submit a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to the government. A FAFSA is not required in order to obtain a Parent PLUS loan, though we highly recommend the student to submit one. FAFSA forms are available online and from the BYU-Hawaii Financial Aid Office.

Review the Federal Aid Application Process for step-by-step instructions on applying for federal aid at BYU-Hawaii.

It is strongly encouraged that students and parents submit the FAFSA to the government by March 15th. For winter semester, submission should be made by September 15th. In order for BYU-Hawaii to receive the student’s FAFSA data from the government, the student MUST list BYU-Hawaii as a school of choice (code 001606) when completing the FAFSA.  After receiving the FAFSA information from the government electronically, we then correspond with the student regarding additional information that might be needed.
