Selecting GE Classes

  The university's new General Education program is now being implemented, and is expected to be completed in fall of 2001. The description which follows is a step in this transition.


Area I--Basic Skills

Quantitative and Logical Reasoning or Second Language Acquisition

A student may elect to take either the math or the language track in sections A and B below; however, the pre-college math requirement must be met by:

  1. Achieving a total of at least 26 by combining the subs core for the Pre-Algebra and Elementary Algebra section with the subs core for the Intermediate Algebra and Coordinate Geometry section of the ACT Mathematics Test, or
  2. Passing the BYUH departmental exam, or
  3. Completing Math 100 (3 credits)

Please note that although this pre-college requirement must be completed, no general education credit will be given. If the student takes Math 100, it may be applied to elective credit. It is expected that students will complete the pre-college math requirement before enrollment at BYUH.

A. Quantitative and Logical Reasoning. (0-4 credits)

The math track can be completed by testing out of (with or without credit) or taking one of the following:

  1. Math 106 (4)
  2. Math 110 and any higher level math course excluding Math 305.
  3. Four credits beyond Math 110, excluding Math 305.

B. Second Language Acquisition (0-12 credits)

The requirement may be fulfilled in any one of the following ways:

  1. Passing a language course at the 201 level.
  2. Getting credit by examination in language courses through the 201 level.
  3. Certifying competency in English if English is the student's second language, by passing out of or demonstrating proficiency needed to pass out of the EIL (English as an International Language) Program.
  4. Testing out without credit. When the student is bilingual and it is ambiguous which is the second language, it may be necessary to be certified in both languages.

Exercise and Sport Science (2 credits)

  1. Exercise and Sport Science 177 (1).
  2. Any Exercise and Sport Science 100 series activity course (1)

    Note: The following courses are designed to help students sharpen their skills for success in college. Although they are not included as General Education neither requirements, nor can one obtains GE credit for taking them, students would be well advised to consider taking them as elective credits.

  3. General Studies 110 Effective Study and Adjustment to College (1)
  4. General Studies 120 Career Exploration (1)
  5. Communication Studies 101 Public Speaking (3)

Introduction to the fundamental ideas and philosophical underpinnings of civilization (6 credits).

Introduction to the natural world (6 credits)

Any course from the following list:

Introduction to the human environment (3 credits)

Area III--Synthesis

A. History of Civilizations (6), a two-semester sequence.

  1. History 201 History of Civilizations to 1500 (3)
  2. History 202 History of Civilizations since 1500 (3)

    Note: Various sections may be taught from different perspectives (politics, philosophy, literature, economics, etc.) but each will be history based and address the same fundamental questions.

B. Advanced Writing (2 credits)

  • English 301 (2)* or
  • English 314, 315, 316 (3), or approved senior Seminar

    Note: English 301 will be offered beginning Winter Semester 2000.

C. Interdisciplinary Studies (3)

Students will choose from a variety of courses which transcend the artificial divisions of scholarly disciplines. These courses will frequently be team taught, using the expertise and resources of several academic areas.
