Student Counseling Services

The Student Counseling Services is located in Room 181 of the McKay Building. It provides individuals, couple, and group counseling by mental health professionals. A licensed psychologist also administers or supervises psychological and psycho-educational testing.

Counseling Services emphasizes proactive support, assisting students on a regular basis to prevent significant problems. We offer a volunteer tutor network, services for students with special needs, and a variety of programs for Pacific Islanders, women, married students and their dependents, and other student groups. These services help students increase their coping capacities, facilitate personal growth, and reduce stress and dysfunction.

Counseling Services offers a wide range of programs and services for BYU-Hawaii students. These includes:

Academic Services

  • Academic Advising and counseling with all students
  • Student Development 101 (a basic course about college life)
  • Student Development 102 (career development)
  • Academic counseling for at-risk student
  • Summer Option Program (a summer-enrollment option that allows new freshman to get an early start on the rigors of college life)
  • Graduate School admission counseling
  • Career Counseling for all BYUH students and alumni
  • Learning strategies
  • Assistance in overcoming test anxieties

Mental Health Services

Psychological assessments for learning disabilities and mental health problems, counseling and psychotherapy for a wide spectrum of personal problems ranging from serious depression to conflicts with roommates, marriage counseling, family therapy, premarital counseling, and a variety of group therapies throughout the year. Crisis-on-call service (24 hours a day, 7 days a week) for BYUH students and their dependents in conjunction with BYUH security, 293-3911.
Outreach Services
  • Student Development 358R (a training course for resident advisors in the single student dorms)
  • Counselor online, an online email program to respond quickly to students' inquiries and short-term concerns (email address is counseloronline@byuh.edu)
  • Volunteer tutor network: a listing of volunteer student tutors on various subjects
  • Speakers for church or students club activities on mental health topics ranging from anxiety to time
  • Marriage and Family Resource Center (MFRC) located at the MPC 107 (TVA chapel area)
The MFRC provides the following services:
  • "Children and Me Time" activities, where parents can meet other parents, learn new ideas and parenting skills, and plan or participate in fun activities with children; nursery is provided
  • "Communication Skills Group," structured 8-10 week workshop to develop effective communication skills and discuss topics relevant to effective communication; nursery is provided
  • "TVA Family Day," a fun day for married students and their dependents conducts every fall semester; many community agencies/businesses and campus services set up booths and games for the families
  • A family library that includes children's books, games, parent-help videos, and other valuable information
  • A mother mentoring program, a program that pairs up experienced mothers with new mothers

Services for Students with Special Needs

Services for Students with Special Needs exists to help students who have visual, learning, auditory, mobility disabilities or impairments to function in a graduate from Brigham Young University-Hawaii. The office coordinates services to helps students.
