SIDNEY ADAIR PALFREY January 8, 1921 - April 22, 2004 Kitty (Sidney Adair) Palfrey was born in Jacksonville, Florida on January 8, 1921, the third and last daughter born to Henry
Porterfield Adair and Marie Manning Adair. She spent many years in Washington, D.C., where she graduated from The Cathedral School and Holten Arms School, but she always considered Jacksonville her home. On October 20, 1945, she married her high school sweetheart, Campbell
Palfrey, Jr., and they set off for life in the US Air Force, Campbell's chosen career. A year later, in Lake Charles, LA, a
daughter, Katherine Adair (Kit) was born, followed three years later by their
first and only son, Campbell III was born in West Point, NY (where Campbell had
attended the United States Military Academy), two years later a daughter, Jane
Wigginton was born in Fort Belvoir, VA., followed seven years later by another
daughter, Susan Saunders, in Omaha, NE. The Air Force took the family to many
parts of the US, but primarily in the DC area, while Campbell was stationed in the Pentagon. In 1965, the Palfreys
moved to Honolulu, Hawaii, where Campbell finished his service duty at Hickam Air Force Base.
Kitty was a homemaker as well as an active volunteer in several organizations,
including the Honolulu Academy of Arts. She also maintained memberships in the
Honolulu Junior League as well as the Jacksonville Junior League and the Holten
Arms Alumnae Association. Kitty and Campbell decided to retire in Honolulu, where he began another successful career as a
stockbroker with E.F. Hutton, from which he fully retired in 1988. Kitty
remained in Honolulu following Campbell's death in 1999. She died after a brief illness on April 22, 2004. She will be most remembered by her friends for her
wonderful sense of humor as well as her boundless generosity. Her children and
grandchildren, most of whom were fortunate enough to be with her immediately
preceding her death, sadly miss her. Her beloved husband, Campbell, a
granddaughter, Susan Trace Paterno, a sister, Polly Adair, and a nephew,
Elliott Wilson Butts III, predeceased her. In addition to her children,
Katherine (Kit) Paterno of San Diego, Campbell Palfrey, III, of Chicago, Jane
John of Denver, and Susan Dowling of Honolulu, she is survived by her cherished
sister, Louise Adair Butts, of Tryon, NC., a nephew, Leighton Adair Butts
(Jill) of Tryon, and five grandchildren: Sydney Adair Paterno of Davis, CA.,
