KURT EUGENE KE'EAUMOKU JOHNSON July 21, 1928-April 30, 2004 Kurt lived life well. Born in Honolulu to parents Rachel Kinney and Sixtus Johnson in 1928, he was Hawaiian, Swedish, English, Scottish and French. He grew up in Waikiki and loved surfing, fishing and everything to do with the ocean. As a young boy he would drag his huge solid wood surfboard to the ocean stopping every now and then to catch his breath. The beach boys at Waikiki would call him "Johnson Boy" and taught him how to surf. He would also spend long summer days on the ocean near the family home in Hakipu'u where the ocean and long secluded beaches were his playground. He was a gifted artist and an excellent musician (guitar and ukulele). He graduated from Punahou in the class of 1946 as student body president and later attended Menlo College with intentions of becoming an architect. With the Korean War looming on the horizon his college education was put on hold when he joined the United States Air Force. From the moment he began flying he knew in his heart that he discovered his true calling. He was a natural. He flew combat missions in Korea as a F-86 Sabre fighter pilot and later an F-102 pilot in Viet Nam. In 1953, he married the love of his life and wife of fifty years - Claire. They had three children and would often sing and play music together. Kurt continued flying fighters and was a dedicated and vital member of the 199th fighter squadron, eventually retiring in 1985 as full Colonel in the Hawaii Air National Guard. He loved telling stories and as everyone knew, he was good at it. He loved crossword puzzles, scotch old fashions, mangoritas, and had a mean sweet tooth. He loved Hawaii and he loved his country, which he fought to protect. He loved his friends and family and would always take the time to express it. When he loved you, you knew it - he exuded it. What an incredible man. Beloved husband, father, friend and mentor he is survived by his loving wife Claire, sister Moana, children Ro, Arna and Koa and grandchildren Parker and Alena. On April 30th 2004 Kurt passed away peacefully during the early evening, at home by the sea.    [Adv Maay 30, 2004]
