He also was a former police and liquor and planning commissioner and served in the Hawaii National Guard. He was born in Hilo. He is survived by son Daniel K. Grant-Johnson; daughters Jacquelyn P. and Raena N. Johnson, JoAnn L. Pacheco, Jennifer H. Bettis and Dannette M. Vaka'uta; brother Edward "Spittoon"; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
