Jay Landis, 82, a tireless crusader for Hawaiian causes on the Wai'anae Coast, died of pneumonia May 4 at St. Francis West Medical Center. Unmarried and childless, Landis devoted half a century of his life to improvement of his community. A marina at Poka'i Bay, a public library, a sewage treatment plant and new beach parks came about partly because of his persistent effort. Landis, a grandson of Link McCandless, a former delegate to Congress, contributed the first $500 to establish a Hawaiian language program at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo. As a lifetime member of the Wai'anae Hawaiian Civic Club, he worked for the building of E'ala, a double canoe, now used as an educational tool. He was a founder of the Lualualei Lions Club and president of the Wai'anae Council, predecessor of the Wai'anae Neighborhood Board. His cousin, Albert Silva, said Landis was asked many times to run for political office but always refused. "He steered away from Hawaiian political issues," said Silva. "He concentrated on culture and education." He often testified on Wai'anae Coast issues before the City Council. An authority on Wai'anae Coast history, he was a major contributor to the book, "Historic Wai'anae." In the 1940s, he installed a screen in his back yard and showed free movies for Wai'anae Coast kids who couldn't afford the price of a movie-theater ticket. Landis was born March 13, 1920, in San Francisco. At 12, he came to Hawai'i and lived with his aunt, Annie Silva, in Wai'anae in back of the police station. She became his guardian and raised him along with her own six sons. After graduating from the eighth grade, Landis quit school and moved to Kalihi where he lived with another aunt while working in construction. About 1946, two of his Wai'anae cousins drove their Model-A Ford to Kalihi. When Landis came to the curb, a cousin said, "Jay, it's time to come home." Landis went inside, packed a Pan American Airways flight bag and went back to Wai'anae where he lived after that, taking care of his aunt. "He was always proud of being Hawaiian, even when many Hawaiians weren't" said Silva. "He loved Wai'anae and its people." He is survived by four first cousins and more than 30 second cousins. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m., June 2, at Sacred Hearts Church in Wai'anae. Landis' ashes will be scattered off Poka'i Bay from the Hawaiian Civic Club canoe E'ala after the services. The family requests no flowers. Donations may be sent to the Jay Landis Memorial Scholarship Fund, Hawaiian Studies, 87-164 Maliona Street, Wai'anae, HI 96792. [Adv 23/5/2001]

Kenneth A. Lauahi, 74, an electrical contractor, died Dec. 21. He is the fourth of nine people indicted in the scandal to die. At the heart of the scheme, which stole some $5.5 million in city relocation funds tied to the Ewa Villages revitalization, was Michael Kahapea, former housing official in charge of relocations, prosecutors say. Kahapea was convicted of fraud using friends and acquaintances to set up bogus companies that billed the city for moving work that was never done or done at inflated prices. Norman Tam, the city's fair-housing officer and one of the key figures, died New Year's Eve 2000 of an apparent heart attack. Keith Ringler and Russell J. Williams died in 1999 of natural causes. A suspect who was being investigated died in 1997, before the first indictments in May 1998. Lauahi was to have gone on trial on two counts of second-degree theft and second-degree forgery for allegedly overbilling the city for work he performed at Ewa Villages. He maintained his innocence.

Kim Tet Lee, who died July 30 in St. Francis Hospital at
age 88, considered public service his life's calling. Born in Honolulu June 14, 1913, Lee attended
McKinley High School, the University of Hawai'i and graduated from Yenching
(Beijing) University in China in 1935. In 1962 Lee started with the Hawai'i Employees Retirement System. By
1966, he worked his way up to become the head of the organization, retiring in
1977. He served as a trustee for the retirement system from 1980 to 1986.
Lee volunteered countless hours with
the state judiciary, and the state Land and Natural Resources department. More
recently, Lee spent most of his time as a volunteer with the Employees'
Retirement System. It may have
been his Chinese heritage, which values civil service highly, said Lee's son
Theodore. "Public service brought my dad great satisfaction." The state honored Lee last year when Gov.
Cayetano proclaimed July 25, 2000, Kim Tet Lee Day in recognition of Lee's
"lifelong commitment to public service" as an administrator and
volunteer staff member. Lee was
married to the former Emma Tenn, now deceased. He is survived by sons Michael

RICHARD Y.C. LEE
- A memorial service will be held Oct. 7 for Richard Y.C. Lee, a managing
director of equities at Cantor Fitzgerald's e-speed electronic trading
division, who was on the 104th floor of the World Trade Center when he became
one of more than 6,000 victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. The New York Police Department confirmed
Lee's death. Born on July 4,
1967, in Washington, D.C., Lee was raised in Hawai'i and was a 1986 graduate of
Punahou School, where he excelled at academics, sports and music. He went on to Yale University, where he
majored in political science and graduated in 1991. At 6-foot-4, 240 pounds, the former football
player was visibly strong, but his true strength lay in his intelligence,
loyalty, determination and compassion, said his wife, Karen Lee. "He was the best of us," said Rich
Huff, his Yale football teammate and best man. "He shared nothing but the
best with us, and be brought out the best in all of us." As dedicated as Lee was to work, he also was
devoted to his family and friends, especially his wife and young son, Karen Lee
said. He would call and e-mail home a dozen times a day. The walls of his office were papered with
photographs of his 22-month-old son. In their new home, Lee threw himself into woodworking, building toy
chests and bookshelves for his son's playroom. Rich Lee is the son of the late Ronald Lee Sr., a former business
professor in Honolulu. He is
survived by his mother, Susan Yoshinaka, a retired Kalihi Elementary School
principal who recently moved to New York; his brothers, Ronald
"Buddy" Lee and Alex Lee, both of New York City, and his grandmother,
Sueko, of Honolulu. The memorial
service is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Punahou School's Thurston Memorial Chapel.
