Richard "Dick" Hagemeyer, former director of the National Weather Service Pacific Region, died Oct. 25, 2001 in Honolulu. He was 77. Hagemeyer was internationally recognized for his leadership in developing the U.S. Tsunami Warning Program. He also was credited with modernizing weather services in Hawai'i and the Pacific Region, and improving coordination of tropical cyclone response in Pacific Rim countries. For the past 19 years, Hagemeyer oversaw weather services in Hawai'i, Guam, American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau and the Marshall Islands. He also served as manager of the Tsunami Warning Program and was the U.S. representative to the International Coordinating Group for the Tsunami Warning System in the Pacific, which he chaired for several years. Scott Gudes, acting administrator with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said Hagemeyer was a "dedicated and energetic public servant." "His interest in NOAA and improving weather services in the Pacific region made him a valuable member of our management team," Gudes said. "Dick possessed that unique combination of technical expertise and an unwavering commitment to his employees and the communities where he lived." Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Hagemeyer served with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He then completed his education at Parks School of Aviation and Engineering at St. Louis University. Hagemeyer joined the National Weather Service (then the U.S. Weather Bureau) in 1950, serving in Washington, D.C. He held numerous managerial positions and in 1982 was named Pacific Region director in Hawai'i. During his tenure, Hagemeyer ensured that jurisdictions he served received the most advanced technology available. New facilities were built in Hawai'i and new offices in American Samoa and Hilo are under construction or planned. Technological upgrades also were made at the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in 'Ewa Beach. In 1987, Hagemeyer received the U.S. Department of Commerce Gold Medal, the department's highest award, for outstanding leadership in the Pacific Region. "His knowledge of weather forecasting coupled with his fiscal acumen was a great combination," said retired National Weather Service director general Jack Kelly. Hagemeyer is survived by his wife, Helen; sister, Mary Crook; brother, Bart Jr.; and nieces and nephews. Memorial service will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Honolulu. Maile Rachel Hale, among the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, is remembered as an intelligent woman with a sense of humor and quiet grace. "I don't think there's a gentler, kinder soul than Maile," Diane Ueki, a librarian at Hale's alma mater, Kaiser High School. Hale was attending a seminar at Windows on the World restaurant atop the World Trade Center when the terrorist attacks occurred. Hale, who was 26, also was remembered as a bright student -- she graduated in 1993 as valedictorian and went on to attend Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn., where she majored in chemistry. "Her talent for science and business was phenomenal," said Vickie Kirihara, who taught Hale's advanced placement chemistry class at Kaiser. College roommate Kimberly Gilbert described Hale as a talented woman who had various interests. "She was probably one of the few chemistry majors at Wesleyan who spent time both manipulating plastic molecular models as well as improvising dance performances on stage -- or in the kitchen," Gilbert said. "If you stopped by her room, you might find her listening to Hawaiian music, reading a book for literature class or carefully figuring mathematical equations with precise strokes of her pencil." Soon after graduation, Hale moved to Boston where she worked as an administrative assistant for Boston Investor Services. Within two years, Hale became vice president and chief operating officer of Boston Investor Services, overseeing $5 billion to $10 billion in assets, friends and family members said. She planned to attend graduate school after a successful start in her career. Though Hale's work was demanding, her "wonderful sense of humor pervaded everything she did," said Boston Investor Services President Ted Wendell. "Even in the most frustrating moments, the chuckles and giggles would emerge," Wendell said. Throughout her life, she influenced others to appreciate life and always practiced the spirit of aloha. "She made me want to be a better person, just by standing next to her," said her sister, Marilyce. Hale is survived by her parents, Rob and CarolAnn Hale of Honolulu; sisters Marilyce Hale and Martha Hale Farrell; brother-in-law Shawn Farrell; grandfather Nathan S. Gustav Arthur Tafu Tupulo Hannemann III, a Mormon Church leader in Hawai‘i and father of former City Council Chairman Mufi Hannemann, died Sunday in Honolulu. He was 89. Gustav Hannemann was born on April 3, 1911 in Lotopa, Western Samoa. His mother, Rosie, was the younger sister of Queen Makalita of Manua, the last queen of any of the Samoan Islands. Hannemann was a teacher and principal in Samoa and came to Hawai‘i in the early 1930s to receive additional training at Kamehameha Schools. He returned to Samoa, where he married Faiaso Soliai, who converted him to the Mormon faith. Together, the Hannemanns went on many Mormon missions and helped open churches throughout Samoa. In 1953, the family moved to Hawai‘i, where Gustav Hannemann would become one of the first Mormon bishops of Samoan ancestry, presiding over the Moanalua Ward. Hannemann also worked at Sears, Liberty House and Foremost Dairies, but always had time for his family. "My father was an outstanding example of a father that was never too tired to spend time with his children," Mufi Hannemann said. "He was the hardest working individual that I’ve ever met in my life. I recall as a youngster, as tired as he was, he always had time to help me with my homework. He always had time to come to my ballgames." Nephi Hannemann added that his father’s focus was on church and family. "I can’t recall him going to a movie, or a ballgame, or any kind of function alone. It always was a family outing or a church outing," he said. Harry A. Hanson, a noted certified public accountant and businessman, died Monday Feb 26, 2001 in Honolulu. He was 90. Hanson was born in Chicago and graduated from the University of Illinois School of Business in 1931. With jobs scarce because of the Depression, Hanson went to New York and worked as a seaman. He worked his way to California, where he joined his older brother John. The two left for Hawai‘i on a Matson ocean liner in 1932. Once in Hawai‘i, Harry Hanson began his successful accounting career by doing audits for the firm Tennant and Grainey. Much of his work took him to Neighbor Island sugar mills. Hanson, his brother and Theodore Raun founded the certified public accounting firm Hanson, Raun & Hanson. The firm’s clients included the Halek¬lani Hotel, Foodland and the Magoon companies. In 1981, Hanson’s firm became part of Coopers and Lybrand, now known as PricewaterhouseCoopers. After the merger, Harry Hanson worked at Magoon Estate and Magoon Brothers Ltd., where he served as director until last year. Eaton "Bob" Magoon, former president of both companies, described Hanson as a wonderful person. "All the wonderful things of mankind were in him," Magoon said. Hanson is survived by his daughter, Lauren; sister, Gladys Baldwin; and sister-in-law, Pleiades Hanson. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Central Union Church’s Atherton Chapel. William C. Harr, a World War II pilot and former national commodore of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, will be remembered by friends and family Friday at a "celebration of life" at his Honolulu home. Harr, known to his friends as Papa, was a retired general contractor. He died at his home Friday July 6, 2001 at the age of 77. Born in Butte, Mont., Harr grew up in San Francisco and attended the University of San Francisco. His decorations during World War II included the Purple Heart, awarded after his airplane was shot down in the Battle of the Aleutians. Harr established Harvis Construction and Develco Corporation to build commercial and residential real estate projects in California and Hawai'i. He had been a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, 14th District, since 1975, held elected and appointed offices at every level, including his term as national commodore in 1987-88, and was also active in the Coast Guard Foundation. His 41-foot cabin cruiser Malama Kai was an auxiliary vessel, used for everything from search-and-rescue to mock boarding exercises. He was a member of Lions Club, Easter Seal Society, Elks Club, Police Athletic Club, Boys Club and Sea Scouts. Harr is survived by daughters Margaret Bladet and Christine Smazenko of Sacramento, and Shawn, of Honolulu; four grandchildren; hanai daughters Frances Leilani and Roberta Erickson of Honolulu; and family friend Olive Deming. A celebration will take place between 4 and 7 p.m. at the family home, to be followed at a later date by scattering of ashes at sea. Anita Carmen Hecht, who resided in a suite at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel for 20 years after the death of her third husband, died Friday at her home in Waimea. She was 95.

She was known as a patron of the arts and was a benefactor of the Honolulu Academy of Arts, where director George Ellis said "she quietly supported virtually every aspect of all programs for more than 30 years." Lorraine Dove, a friend in Waimea, described Hecht as "an elegant, compassionate woman who survived two world wars while outliving three brilliant husbands." Hecht was born July 23, 1905, in Sydney, Australia, but lived around the globe, developing what she called a self-taught sense of world affairs and a fondness for French culture. She was a recipient of the French Order of Merit for her support of French culture and the arts. She met her third husband, Frank Hecht, in Hawai'i and the two traveled around the world. While living in Georgetown, near Washington, D.C., the Hechts became known for having world leaders as guests. The Hechts also maintained homes in Liechtenstein, France and Hawai'i. Frank Hecht, who was national president of the Navy League, was a retired inventor of elevator technology. When her husband died, Anita Hecht gave up their Diamond Head residence and moved into a suite at the Royal Hawaiian because, she said, "it was less expensive." After two decades at the hotel, she moved to Waimea, where she spent the last five years. She put her grandson, Rick Habein, through Hawai'i Preparatory Academy and became a major scholarship contributor to the private school. "She had a great zest for life even though she needed two caregivers in the last several months," Habein said. Although his grandmother often joked with him that if he didn't do well in school, he'd end up a cowboy, she supported Habein in establishing Habein Livestock and Cattle Co., widely known for pioneering organic, forage-fed, hormone-free cattle. A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at the St. James Episcopal Church in Waimea, with scattering of ashes at a later date. Dodo Mortuary in Hilo is handling the arrangements. Memorial gifts may be made to the North Hawai'i Community Hospital in Waimea, Alliance Francaise or the Honolulu Academy of Arts. Flowers are welcome at the service. "Grandma loved flowers. When she occasionally became ill, I'd tease her that the hospital room always looked like a gangster's funeral," Habein said yesterday.

James Canfield Heckman was among the few people allowed access to the privately owned island of Niihau as a reporter for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. Heckman is remembered as a "wonderful writer" with a "great sense of humor" by longtime Star-Bulletin reporter Helen Altonn. He held various positions as general assignment reporter, rewrite man and assistant city desk editor from 1958 to 1962. As an assistant city editor, he would "remind people not to slough off on the little, unimportant stories because every inch of a newspaper costs money," Altonn said. Heckman, retired picture editor of the Seattle Times, died Saturday at Tacoma General Hospital in Washington of complications following a tractor accident in his driveway on Easter Sunday, which caused several broken ribs, said son-in-law Phil Lou. He was 69. High school and college friend Bob Monahan, who was also a Honolulu newspaperman at the time, said he "always had a mischievous sense of humor." "He used to really thrive on writing for the April Fools' edition of the student paper that succeeded in getting us all in trouble," said Monahan, who followed Heckman to the Seattle Times. Heckman did military intelligence work as an Army corporal from 1953 to 1955, he said. That duty might have productively employed Heckman's penchant for pranks, Monahan mused. "I always figured that if the military intelligence would have turned Jim loose in a disinformation campaign, the cold war would have ended long before it did. He was a great wit." Lou recalls his father-in-law telling him he was the first reporter to accompany then-Gov. William Quinn on a tour of Niihau. "He still has the Niihau shell lei," Lou said. Fred Hemmings Sr. dies at 85. Hard-working, a loving husband and a devoted father to all of his six children -- these are the words family members used to describe Frederick Mathew Hemmings Sr., who died Saturday after a long illness. He was 85. His son, state Sen. Fred Hemmings of Kailua, remembered his father as a "feisty character" with a great sense of humor who loved to tell stories. "He was quite humorous despite his gruff style," said Hemmings. "But most important, he did the best he could with his life, and he raised 'six wonderful children,' as he liked to call us." Hemmings Sr. instilled in all six of his children a love of the ocean and ocean sports, including surfing and paddling. He had no problem getting up at 5 in the morning to take the boys to a Makaha surfing contest. "He was very driven and competitive himself," said Fred Hemmings, who remembers his father getting up at 4:30 a.m. to get a good spot to hold campaign signs during his first bid for office. "He'd fight for the corner of Kapahulu and Ala Wai," he said. The son of a Navy man, Hemmings moved with his parents to Hawaii when he was 7 years old. An avid paddler, he joined the Outrigger Canoe Club at 12 and in 1934 was a member of the four-man junior championship paddling team. He was a member of the first Roosevelt High School graduating class in 1933, along with his friend Lex Brodie. Fred Hemmings remembered his father pointing to a huge banyan tree on campus and saying: "Lex and I planted that damn banyan tree." The banyan tree is still there, said Fred Jr. Brodie remembered his classmate as a "a man with a wonderful personality, who was liked by everyone." After graduating from high school, Hemmings attended the University of Hawaii. He later joined the Honolulu Police Department, where he was a detective. He was a member of the Army's Air Corps during World War II, and became a lieutenant colonel in the Air Corps reserves. Hemmings worked at various state airports, retiring as state assistant airport manager. In 1938 he married Lillian Freitas of Honolulu, whom he called "the most beautiful woman on Earth," according his sister-in-law, Sybil Gier of Kailua. Prone to giving nicknames, he called his wife "Mother Flower" because of her strong Catholic views, and had a nickname for each of his children. He called Fred Jr. "bully boy," a name he later changed to "small Fred," recalled Fred Jr. Hemmings Sr. was a family man who loved his children, said Gier. "He was adamant about treating all six children equal. What one gets the other five get in equal share." He was also a loving husband who for years went to Mass at 6 a.m. every day in memory of his wife who died in 1983, Gier said. Hemmings Sr. is survived by sons Mark, Fred Jr. and Aka; daughters Cynthia Leonard, Maria Hemmings and Heidi Hemmings-Hall; 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Star of The Sea Church. Burial will follow at Diamond Head Memorial Park.
