Duane Walker -As vice
president of patient care and chief nursing officer of Queen’s Medical Center, Duane Walker was highly respected in
the health-care community. His
co-workers knew another side of him. He’s the guy who put the plastic mouse in the office refrigerator. “He had a mischievous streak; he would be
the first person to play a gentle
practical joke,” said Connie Wiletzky, head of patient services. “It
would not be unusual to open your
drawer and find Duane had left a little surprise. “He was the kind of person who took a lot of pleasure in other
people’s joy and achievement. He’d be
the first to write a note or give a hug when
something good happened or when something bad happened,” she said. “Duane talked to the president of the
medical center the same as he treated the
housekeeper filling the paper towels and the gardener trimming the
trees. “If you walked through Queen’s
today, you’d find that people are basically
crying.” Walker, 59, died Sunday
Jan 11, 1998 in Queen’s after a lengthy struggle with heart disease. In his 12 years at the center, he was behind
many innovations and projects including
a “distinguished nurse researcher” lecture series and the holistic health program Lokomaika‘i. He worked for
the founding of the Center for Nursing
Research, a joint project of Queen’s and the University of Hawaii School of Nursing. “He was responsible for the maintenance of standards for
professional nursing and for nursing
education. He developed extensive relationships between the medical center and Hawaii educational
institutions,” Wiletzky said. Walker
served at the UH nursing school as senior director of clinical affairs and
associate dean for development. He was a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. He was active in
numerous professional and community
organizations, including the Ronald McDonald House. Last year, the American Association of
Nurse Executives named him nurse executive of the year and the Leukemia
Foundation honored him as man of the
year. He was co-author of “The
New Nurse Manager” textbook and wrote more
than 25 articles for professional publications. Before joining the Honolulu hospital, he was
with Stanford University Medical Center
for eight years as associate administrator for nursing. He was born in Waterloo, Iowa, earned a nursing degree from
Weber State University and a master
degree from the University of Utah.
Wiletzky said Walker was an avid rose grower. Outside his office window is a small garden of descendants of
roses that Queen Emma, alii founder of
Queen’s, planted. “He nursed them to
health, and created the Queen Emma rose garden. He had hopes of making it quite a bit larger.” His
friends also remember him for “always seeking a home for stray cats or someone’s extra puppies.” His
family listed six pets among his
survivors. He is survived by
Timothy Moran McClellan and sons Geoffrey and Troy, daughter Robyn, and two granddaughters. Funeral services will begin at 6 p.m. tomorrow at Borthwick
Mortuary. Friends may call after 4
p.m. Aloha attire is requested. Donations may be made to the Duane D. Walker
Nursing Fund at The Queen’s Medical Center.

Judy M. Weightman’s passion for justice and
equality was not only the theme of her
career and life interests, it was her legacy, friends said. Weightman, 56, a professor and director of the pre-admission
program for minorities at the William S. Richardson School of Law for the past 10 years, died Wednesday Mar 4,
1998 at Queen’s Hospital after a long
battle with cancer. Her work as a
founder of the Hawaii Holocaust Project produced the award-winning documentary film “From Hawaii to the Holocaust, a Shared Moment in History,” and
television shows featuring the oral histories of Hawaii’s nisei soldiers of
World War II who participated in the
liberation of the Dachau concentration
camp, and of Jewish survivors of the Nazi genocidal campaign. The American Bar Association recently
recognized her with its Ramsay Award
for bringing representation from diverse groups into the legal profession.
Moya Davenport Gray, director of the Office of Information Practices and a law school classmate, said:
“Her incredible energy and passion . .
. probably instilled that passion for equality with all her students. I think the law school and
community will really benefit from her
work as they move into their careers. They will have learned from the best.” Circuit Judge Sandra Simms said:
“All of the students who have gone
through that program were like her children. She was their mother in addition to being their professor,
heard their crises and confidences,
cried with them.” Darren Ching, a
former student, said: “Starting with her days as a public defender, she has been involved in helping people who couldn’t help themselves. “I was lucky enough to be one of the
students she gave guidance xxx in law
and just in life in general. She was always there offering her support. The Hawaii Women Lawyers honored her last year with a distinguished service award. The Jewish
Federation of Hawaii named her for a
lifetime achievement award. She was a charter
member of the Afro American Lawyers Association and an officer of the
American Civil Liberties Union. She co- chaired Hawaii State Bar Association committees on minority
bar passage and increasing

During her illness, Weightman undertook a project with the goal of helping future breast cancer victims. Her
son, Wayne, a professional filmmaker,
documented her journey through
chemotherapy, doctor visits, bone scans and lab tests, and

whole experience was positive, a celebration of life,” said Wayne Weightman. “The essence is that you
should continue to live your life.” Born in Pennsylvania, she was the child of
Jewish parents who had fled persecution
in Poland and Russia. She received a bachelor’s degree from California University of Pennsylvania, and master and

Don Weller - Businessman Don
Weller was a music lover and writer known for his humor and generosity. Evelyn
Phinney, who worked for Weller, said she found him dead at 2:30 p.m. Saturday
Sep 12, 1998 at home. An autopsy is being done. He was 52. Weller, born in
Philadelphia, came to Hawaii on a fraternity dare. For 18 years, he taught
different disciplines at the University of Hawaii: English, communications and
political science. He was Hawaii's correspondent to Billboard magazine and
wrote music reviews for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. Elizabeth Kunimoto, former
chairwoman for the University of Hawaii communications department, remembers
Weller as "very interactive and very entertaining." Kunimoto, who worked
with Weller at UH in the 1970s, said: "He could do a lecture with very
little preparation. He had a fantastic smile and was very joyful; he exuded
enthusiasm." In the 1980s, Weller established AudioTech and Soundscape
Designs -- a business that installs background music/audio equipment for
business offices. "He was absolutely as loyal a friend you could possibly
have," said longtime friend Ron Jacobs. "As a person, if he knew you,
he was absolutely caring and giving." Jacobs, a morning radio announcer
for KCCN-AM, said Weller was not only a good friend to him but like an uncle to
his daughter. "The first thing he gave her before she could talk was a
turkey, and the first thing they would say to one another when they saw each
another was, 'gobble, gobble.' " Even as Jacobs' daughter became a
teen-ager, he said, she would go running into his house and say 'gobble.'
Weller's physician, Dr. Barry Odegaard, said: "I'll never forget: I was
observing his knee surgery and while (Weller) was being sedated, before he went
under he said, 'Forgive them Father for they know not what they do.' Everyone
laughed." With all Weller's humor, there was a more serious side to him,
friend say. To Phinney and Asher Okata, it was Weller's direction and guidance
that led them to what they have accomplished and what they are now. "He
basically kept me going in terms of what I do now. He introduced me to people
-- contacts for my field in communications," said Okata, an engineer with
McHale Videofilm. "Anything you wanted that was within his power, he would
help you out." Phinney is also grateful for Weller's guidance. "He
gave me an opportunity at a time of my life when no one would," said
Phinney. "I was fresh out of college and he gave me the opportunity to run
his business, an opportunity to be more than a clerk." Phinney said
memorial services will be held in early October. Weller's remains will be
transported to Philadelphia. Those interested in attending memorial services
can contact Phinney at 488-6227.
