Dorothy Valentina Early, 74, of Honolulu, died Feb. 23, 1995. She was born in Brooklyn, and was a retired telephone operator and volunteer for charitable groups. Jose Ebanez, 57, of Hilo, formerly of Honolulu, died Feb. 19, 1995. He was born in Paauhau and was a professional drywall taper. Audrey Ellan Elderts, 58, of Ewa Beach, died Feb. 25, 1995. She was born in Honolulu and was longtime president of Elderts Maintenance Services, Inc. Gabriel Walahian Empron Jr., 53, of Honolulu, died Jan. 5, 1995. He was born in Honolulu and was a security guard with Star Protection Agency and an active citizen’s band radio operator (handle Four String Jammer) and entertainer with Gaylord and the Shadows. Survived by wife, Barbara Jean; stepchildren, Kismet K. Gould, Lou Ann K. George, and William L.L. Emmaline M. English, of Lihue, Kaui, died Feb. 9, 1995. She was born on Maui and was a retired armory administrator with the Hawaii National Guard. She was a former professional hula dancer and had held positions as chair of the Kauai Democratic Party, president of the Kauai Chapter of the HGEA and member of the Kauai Liquor Control Commission and Police Commission. She received the Hawaii National Guard’s Medal of Merit and Governor’s Award for Distinguished Service. Survived by husband, John; daughter, Mrs. Wallace (Gwendolyn) Rezentes of Lihue; brothers, Walter, Frank, Vernon Gilber and Alvin Correa, all of Maui; sister, Mrs. Ernest (Connie) Mathias of Maui; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. James Enoka, 71, of Puueopaku died Jan 3, 1995. He was born in Papaikou and was a retired maintenance superintendent with the Hilo Medical Center. He was a member of the HGEA and the Puueopaku Kumiai. Norman M. Enos of Honolulu, a retired Jet Super Market produce clerk, died Dec. 28, 1995 in Kapiolani Hospital at Pali Momi. Enos, 72, was born in Honolulu. She is survived by daughters Carlene Lee and Gloria Silva; sons Norman J. Enos and Douglas Oshiro; two brothers; two sisters; and seven grandchildren. [SB 09/01/1996]

Pedro Yambot Espiritu, 95, of Aiea, died Jan. 25, 1995 at Kuakini Medical Center. He was born October 8, 1899 in Manila, Philippines and was a retired barber who had many military clients at Fort Ruger and Schofield to Barber’s Point. Survived by wife, Emily P.; sons, Clifford L. of Florida and Peter M.; stepdaughters, Patsy Garza, Janet Poole of California 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Murray Estes, 85, of Kaneohe, died Feb. 12, 1995. He was born in Idaho and was a long-time member of the Oahu Country Club. He was an attorney and businessman in Honolulu for more than 40 years and retired from law practice in 1980. Hiroshi Eta, 71, of Berkley, CA. formerly of Hilo, died Jan. 30, 1995. He was born in Hiroshima, Japan and was a California State transportation civil engineer. Survived by brothers, Takehiro of Hilo and Chiaki of Honolulu. [Adv Feb. 28, 1995]

Benjamin Calip Eugenio, 79 of Waianae, died Jan. 9, 1995 at Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center. He was born March 18, 1915 in Santiago, Ilocos Sur, the Philippines, and was a member of the Santagenian Association. Survived by wife, Erlinda J.; sons, Rogelio, Romeo (Leticia) of Hawaii, Melicio (Rosita) and Eufemio (Filipina), both of the Philippines; daughters, Yolanda and Lolita; 24 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren. Thomas Stanford “Tookie” Evans – He was famous for years as the voice, deep and dignified of small business in Hawaii. But for another generation, he was also the unforgettable Sheriff Tookie of a daytime television program. On Thursday, friends and fans of Thomas Stanford “Tookie” Evans will gather at Hosoi Garden Mortuary for 6.00pm services in memory of the long-time Hawaii entertainer and entrepreneur who died Jan. 25, 1995 at the age of 67. Evans, executive director the Filipino Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii at the time of his death, had served as the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce’s vice-president and small business advocate and promoter for over a decade. A graduate of Punohou who attended the University of Hawaii and New York University, Evans followed his older brother Kani into radio broadcasting career as an announcer on KGMB radio after World War II. By 1953, he was the gun twirling, sharp shooting sheriff on Six Gun Theater, KGMB-TV’s Saturday western movie show Evans was no drugstore cowboy, however, having established a reputationa as an avid outdoorsman active in scuba diving, skin diving, hunting and water skiing. Being Hawaii’s western hero soon became too much to bear, however. “He just couldn’t take it anymore”, recalled Evans’ cousin, U.S. District Court Judge Sam King. “He was a big hero and the kids loved him, but he found it a very demanding life.” King remembered with a laugh. “Kids recognized him everywhere and he couldn’t smoke a cigarette or take a drink.” Evans moved into marketing for Hawaii’s major hotels, helping open up the market to Japanese tourism, serving as director of sales for Hilton, Ala Moana Americana and Kuilima hotels here. His trademark nickname, he told friends, was given to him by an Aleut Indian – a tribe with which he claimed kinship. Jason M. Evensen of Honolu died Tuesday Dec 26, 1995 at home. Evensen, 66, was born in North Dakota. He is survived by sons Jay D. and Todd; daughter Teena Simmons; sisters Joyce Cruz and Gloria Greenway; 5 grandchildren.Donations may be made to the American Heart Association. Services were private. Rev. Anthony Everaert, 69, of Honolulu, died Feb. 18, 1995. He was born in Kapeile, Belgium, and was a member of the Order of the Congregation of Sacred Hearts. He was a priest in Hawaii for more than 36 years on Oahu, Kauai and Maui and was a pastor for 10 years at St. Michael in Waialua. He served as an associate at Waikiki, Wailuku, Lihue, Makawao and Aiea and enjoyed golf and ballroom dancing. Survived by brothers, Joseph and Frederick Tits. Burial: Hawaiian Memorial Park.
