Information Literacy Program:
Teaching and Learning Opportunities and Methods

Students at Brigham Young University - Hawaii have many opportunities to engage in meaningful activities in order to gain information literacy competencies. These opportunities are offered in a variety of settings and at all levels. The following list of instruction opportunities, methods and activities are offered by the information literacy program. Library Skills Orientation: Instruction librarians teach orientation sessions for all students enrolled in the required core writing course English 101 and for all students enrolled in the required History 201.

Subject Specific or Course Integrated Instruction: The information literacy program supports an extensive commitment to course integrated and subject specific instruction across all disciplines. BYU-H faculty in all departments are encouraged to contact library faculty to help integrate and/or design information competency rich sessions, curriculum and assignments. Subject and course specific Research Guides are often prepared to enhance student awareness of quality resources within specific subject areas.

Individualized Instruction: Individualized instruction is provided by library faculty and staff, through reference services, in the library, across campus, over the phone, and via email as requested to students, faculty, staff, alumni and the broader community.

Teaching and Learning Methods and Activities: The Instruction team incorporates the following goals for all information literacy related instruction:

  • Pedagogy will be active, diverse, multidisciplinary
  • Pedagogy will encompass critical thinking and reflection
  • Pedagogy will support student centered learning
  • Pedagogy will include active and collaborative learning activities
  • Pedagogy will build on existing knowledge that student's bring into the classroom
  • Pedagogy will incorporate variations in learning and teaching styles
  • Pedagogy will include collaboration with classroom faculty
  • Pedagogy will relate information to ongoing coursework
  • Pedagogy will experiment with a wide variety of methods
