Instruction Team and Information Literacy Program:
2007-2008 Goals and Objectives
Sustaining Outcome: Provide a comprehensive instruction program for BYU-H students with information literacy competencies.
Mission: Instruction team will maintain an up to date mission statement for the Information Literacy Program in order to clearly identify and communicate our purpose, priorities and partnerships to ourselves and to the broader community.
Goals and Objectives: The information Literacy program will maintain an updated list of goals and objectives in order to clearly assign roles and responsibilities and to insure continual improvement of the program
- Clearly defined roles and responsibilities are defined for each major goals
- Goals will be reviewed annually by the Library Strategic Planning Committee.
Planning: Planning for the Information Literacy Program will be conducted at the program, curriculum and institutional levels in order to maintain a wide base of support and share information about the program widely
- An annual report will be published to assess and describe accomplishments of instruction team and progress of Information Literacy program.
- The annual report will include priority strategic action items for the coming year.
- Documents describing the program and charting its evolution will be developed for the Web and reviewed annually.
- Assessment data will be used to continually improve the programs
- Assessment plans will be reviewed and revised as needed for each type of instruction
Administrative Support and Teaching Environments: The University, University Librarian and Information Literacy Librarian will provide appropriate vision, support, physical and online environments in order to facilitate growth and continuous improvement of the Information Literacy Program.
- The University Librarian and Information Literacy Librarian will provide clear identification of responsibilities for the Information Literacy Program among classroom faculty, other staff and instruction team members
- Instruction Services Policies and Procedures will be developed.
- Instruction Performance Expectations will be developed.
- Faculty Evaluation Criteria for Instruction will be developed.
- The University Librarian and Information Literacy Librarian will continue to encourage collaboration with departments.
- The University Librarian will continue to value and recognize participation in the Information Literacy Program as institutional rewards are made available.
- Appropriate physical spaces will be provided in order to support the Information Literacy Program
- Appropriate technology will be provided in order to support the Information Literacy Program
Collaboration: Instruction team members will continually collaborate with university colleges, departments, faculty and staff to develop information literacy in order to foster communication and gather support for the program.
- A comprehensive collection of instruction handouts/tutorials will be developed and maintained on the Web to support information literacy across the curriculum at BYU-H (Reference and instruction teams, ongoing)
Pedagogy: The Information Literacy Program will adopt appropriate pedagogy in order to most effectively engage student learning
Staff: The Information Literacy Program will have appropriate staff in order to meet the needs of the program and student body at BYU-H.
- Library faculty will have appropriate expertise and experience as described in Instruction Faculty Performance Expectations
- Faculty/staff will be provided with, and take advantage of, continual opportunities to take part in professional development and training, on and off campus, in Hawaii and beyond.
- Library faculty will collaborate with University Librarian, team leaders, graphic designers, instructional designers, multimedia authoring specialists and classroom faculty in support of information literacy.
Outreach: The Information Literacy program will identify key audiences, partners and constituencies in order to best meet their needs, facilitate communication with stakeholders, and to continually improve the program
- Program activities will be communicated and publicized using a variety of outreach channels in order to reach audiences within the library and across campus.
- A marketing plan will be developed for the Information Literacy program within the guidelines of the Library's marketing plan
- Instruction team faculty will demonstrate an active involvement in campus professional development and training by offering, co-sponsoring, or participating in workshops and programs that relate to information literacy for faculty and staff
- New faculty library orientation
- New Student Orientation Tours
Assessment: Comprehensive and ongoing assessment practices will be implemented for both student learning and for the instruction program in order to continually improve student learning.
- All assessment will be used for ongoing planning and program improvement
- All assessment will include realistic and practical measures
- An assessment plan will be developed for each type of instruction in order to continually improve instruction.
- Program assessment will be directly related to the goals and objectives of the program

The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) published the Information Literacy Competency Standards for Higher Education in 2000. These standards, performance indicators, and outcomes provide a basis for our competencies and for improving information literacy instruction across the BYU-H curriculum and across the country. Brigham Young University - Hawaii uses ACRL's standards to develop, assess and continually improve our information literacy programs, activities and partnerships.
