To make it through the year, most teachers dream up an adventurous summer vacation and fantasize about their months of freedom. That is what I did last summer. As a veteran student teacher, I am here to give suggestions on how to use your summer vacation to survive student teaching. Come to The Education Curriculum Library! We have so many resources to offer that will be valuable to your teaching. I recommend that you come in to browse through our collection for at least an hour or two so that you can familiarize yourselves with our library. Here are some highlights you can’t miss:

Manipulatives -- play with our hands-on learning tools to become familiar with our selection. After a while, your creative juices will begin flowing like a river. Basal series -- looking through the basals will give you an idea of the levels your students should be at according to their grades. You will also find appropriate ways to use a variety of basals to complement your lessons. Periodicals -- Flip through a few periodicals and discover the hidden treasures they offer. My personal favorite is The Mailbox. Spend a little bit of your free time this summer in The Education Curriculum Library. You won’t regret it!

The Cartoon News magazine is designed to help inform students of current events and their political and cultural significance. Included in each issue of the magazine are political cartoons of current events from around the world. Each cartoon has background information along with several questions with answers which could be used in a class discussion. These features definitely help students understand the message behind each cartoon. T.R. Fletcher, a publisher of the magazine said, “one of our goals, indeed, is to let students see that there is more than one perspective on each story in the news. In every issue of Cartoon News you will find cartoonists from far-flung places like Egypt, the Ivory Coast and Denmark, to name just a few.” The Cartoon News Magazine is a great method for covering current events in the classroom. Come by and take a look at them. They are informative as well as entertaining.

New Pathfinders

Self-Esteem
When students feel confident, they are more productive, more willing to try new things, and less afraid of failure. Come check out the self-esteem pathfinder to enhance your classroom with a more comfortable, happy climate.

The Human Body
This pathfinder will be a helpful resource for teachers to use when teaching about the human body. Take advantage of books, as well as manipulatives and posters to give you ideas on how to present the curriculum.

Humor in the Classroom
Combining laughter with learning involves the students emotions which helps them internalize the concepts. This pathfinder will help you find humorous activities and ideas to share with your students.
