What's in it for me?

Follow the

path to ideas

Research can be very time consuming, and so the library is constantly trail-blazing, marking a path of ideas in various topics. Ideas for:

Back-to-School

Halloween

Whales

Dinosaurs

Ancient/Civilizations

Science Fair Projects

Thanksgiving

Christmas

Valentine's Day

are all collected in a “pathfinder,” or pamphlet to guide patrons to the various materials. These pathfinders list ideas for activities, bulletin boards, websites, music, and other resources to develop dynamic teaching units. The collection is constantly growing.

The best kept secret in the library has been revealed for all to see. No longer hidden upstairs where few venture to go, the Education Curriculum Library is now located in the Reserves Room, beside the computers.
The Education Curriculum Library exists to house a wealth of resources (Na Ke Kumu Waiwai) for students, faculty and the North Shore educational community. The NA Ke Kumu Waiwai newsletter will provide information on the collection and other vital information.

The Curriculum Library has:

*Lesson Idea Books

*Bulletin board ideas: fonts, clip art, posters, etc.

*Resource materials for secondary and elementary education

*Manipulatives: Puppets, puzzles, science materials, educational games, etc.

*Educational Software

*The Internet Learning Center

*Big Books for the whole language classroom and storytelling

Peer-Amid our New Resources

Ancient Egypt: A Cultural Atlas for Young
People
by Geraldine Harris, National
Geographic Ancient Egypt Poster Set

and the Smithsonian Hieroglyphic Stamp Collection.

Tips for FutureTeachers

Joining a professional organization is a great way to learn more about your future career. Membership in two such organizations is offered through Brigham Young University-Hawaii’s student chapters. The Hawaii State Teacher’s Association (HSTA) and the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) both offer a plethora of benefits, (aside from the professional touch they add to a resume’), and membership is offered to students for much less than what teachers pay.

HSTA
Membership fees: $12
Contact: School of Education

The HSTA is affiliated with the National Education Association (NEA), a union that all teachers in Hawaii are a part of. They host statewide conferences and offer attendance to national conferences once a year. The main perk however, is that membership gives you insurance to cover you during your practicum.

CEC
Membership fees: $37
Contact: Jana Whetton

Joining the CEC is strongly recommended for special education majors. The membership fee includes a year’s subscription to the magazine Teaching Exceptional Children, and the professional journal Exceptional Children. Members will also have the chance to attend the national CEC conference in Minneapolis in April. Current members are already fundraising for the trip. Don’t miss out!

Explore the Internet Learning Center

Need more space? Increase your classroom walls by at least 25,000 miles!

The newest attraction to the Curriculum Library is the Internet Learning Center. This corner is equipped with a computer and several resources than can enhance almost every spectrum of K-12 education.
This center will provide the much needed tools for integrating the Internet into your lesson plans. Instead of just showing your old maps that hang from the black board, let your students get on-line and have them discover for themselves the wonders of the world.
http://www.supersurf.com offers a page entitled “World Safaris.” Every month they travel to another country and set up

sights that help kids explore that country. Past trips are also available. Imagine the opportunities and excitement that children can receive once they are let out of their regular classroom and into the world without even leaving their desks!
These lesson plans can easily fit into the curriculum of either a pre-service or in-service teacher. The resources that we have come from Classroom Connect, a company that works solely on integrating the WWW into your classroom. We have CD’s and books that can give you tons of ideas on a variety of subjects and grade levels.
For more information, contact Ed Jensen or the Center for Faculty Development at 3871, or stop by the Curriculum Library and see what we have to offer!
